Need help finding/building a mattress for lower back pain

Hi all,

I bought a cheap memory foam mattress several years ago and started waking up with severe pain in my lower back/flank area. Since then, every mattress that I’ve tried has led to the same issue, to differing degrees. I’m considering building my own latex or hybrid/latex mattress but want some advice on specific components before I purchase. I am 6’ 1," 170 pounds, 25 years old. I primarily sleep on my side, but often wake up on my back.

I currently sleep on a Serta Perfect Sleep Hybrid but it has been causing me problems off an on for almost two years. Recently, I tried adding a 3" soft latex topper from Sleep On Latex, but it made the pain worse so I sent it back. Nonetheless, I am considering ordering or building a latex mattress. I would like to stay under $1,500 for a twin XL, if possible.

First question: Would it be better to order a pre-built latex mattress that I can send back if it does not relieve my pain, or do a DIY build from somewhere like APM? I recently tried out a latex mattresses from Savvy Rest at a showroom that I liked on initial impression. One build I am considering, based on the Savvy Rest Serenity, is:

Support layer: 3" blended talalay latex (36 ILD)
Transition layer: 3" blended talalay latex (28 ILD)
Comfort layer: 3" blended talalay latex (19 ILD)

Any advice or speculation on whether or not this build will work for someone with my stature and back pain would be much appreciated. Additionally, any guidance on DIY vs pre-built latex mattresses for a beginner is welcome.

Second question: Should I go with latex as my support layer or pocket coils? I know this question has come up before on the forum, and I’ve tried to research it on my own but haven’t been able to come to a clear answer. Maybe there isn’t one, but again, any advice or guidance would be much appreciated for my specific situation.

Thank you to everyone involved in this forum; it has been eye-opening to learn about the mattress industry.

Not sure if we discussed this yesterday on the phone or not so I will just respond. It would be best to go with our pre-configured model - Twin or TwinXL Adjustable Ultra Plush Latex Sleep System (Blended), #1 Selling Latex Mattress- Adjustable Ultra Plush, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products so you can return it if it doesn’t work out which will be highly unlikely. Normally we use a solid 6" for the Talalay base core but you can request that we cut it into 2 3" layers and just let us know what firmness you want for each of those. For example you would put in the shopping cart the choice of Firm for the base core and 3" Soft #19 for the topper. Then use our Comment Section when checking out to simply write " Please make core 3" of #36 and 3" of #28". We have no handcuffs here because we cut all of our latex in house. Full latex will have much less motion transfer than any coil system which is why I do recommend it vs a hybrid but if you like the extra bounce of coils then that’s a different discussion.

I think we did speak on the phone, but I really appreciate this additional insight regardless. I think I will go with the full latex, as I’m not attached to the extra bounce of coils. And thank you for the advice on customizing the pre-built mattress via your website. I’m looking forward to ordering from you; your customer service is excellent.
