Need help firming up SleepEZ Essential Latex Mattress – wife getting bad back pain

Hi everyone! I’m looking for help firming up a SleepEZ Essential mattress on a budget

Current setup:
SleepEZ Essential mattress which has:
3” medium Dunlop latex (30–32 ILD)
6” HD polyfoam core (1.5lb 36 IFD)
The mattress is on a solid kdframes base, no sagging.

Sleepers:
Wife: 5’10”, 150 lbs, side + stomach sleeper. She is waking up with major back pain
Me: 6’2”, 220 lbs, side sleeper. I get mild lower back/hip pain in the morning. If it were just me I’d deal, but my wife is really struggling.

What we’re feeling:
Mattress is too soft/under-supportive. If I kneel on the bed, it basically bottoms out. I think the polyfoam core is too soft, not the latex layer. My wife slept great on a firm, no-name hotel foam mattress, so she clearly needs more support.

Budget note:
Cant afford a 6” latex support layer right now, trying to keep this fix under $400 (king size bed)

What I’m considering:

Replacing the bottom 6” core with something firmer.

Main option: FoamByMail Lux-HQ
Concern:
Is Lux-HQ too firm or “dead” under 3” of medium Dunlop? I don’t want to spend money and end up with something that feels awful or end up with the same back pain issues.

Another option is getting foam from this place that is local to me but a little more expensive:

They have options in the link plus some extra firm options as well.

Also is replacing the support foam even the right move here? And any other recommendations on what to replace it with?

Thanks!

Sir, how did/did you, solve this?

Something in the 35lb ILD range doesn’t strike me as that soft. But it’s sure a low density foam and likely doesn’t/won’t age well. How old was it? Did it ever sleep well?

You’d think 3" of 50lb and 3" of 35lb, both in the 28lb density area, would firm that up pretty well. Which was the upper “core” layer could be tried either way.. Heck, I might cut both and put the 50lb over the 35 on her side, leave the 50 on the bottom on yours.

I’ve always heard stomach speakers needed a lot of support/firmness. Guess I’m a believer now!
