Need Help Selecting Adjustable Base for Hybrid Mattress

Hello again. This is my second post. My first post was about 10 days ago, and I got some excellent advice that helped me select a split comfort hybrid mattress for my husband and me. If you’re interested, that post is here.

Yesterday, I ordered our new mattress online after a lovely discussion with the kind and knowledgeable Janette at @DLX. Here’s what I decided to purchase:

  • Mattress: LatexLux Hybrid
  • Size: King
  • Firmness: Soft | Medium [Split Firmness], swapping soft Talalay for the standard Dunlop
  • Height: 14”
  • Delivery: Added optional set-up and removal service.

This seems like it will be a great setup for us:

  • Husband: Back sleeper who liked the feel of the Beautyrest Black Series Three Medium
  • Me: Side sleeper who thought the Beautyrest Black Series Three Medium wasn’t soft enough

I’m looking forward to some better sleep, after my body adjusts to the mattress, of course. Over the last month, I’ve been getting terrible sleep, only an average of 4h 3m per day, so I’m excited to give this mattress a try.

Next Step: Selecting an Adjustable Base

From reading the forum, I’ve learned that a mattress is only as good if it’s supported by a solid foundation. That’s what brings me back to getting advice on how to narrow down options for an adjustable base.

About us

To give context on what may be available locally, we live in the Puget Sound area of western Washington state. See below for details about our situation.

Me

  • Middle aged woman
  • Side (occasional back) sleeper
  • 5’9”, very curvy, and between 200-250 lbs.
  • Health Concerns:
    • Chronic pain (headaches and migraines, TMD, neck, back, knee, ankle)
    • GERD
    • Sleep apnea (using CPAP)
  • Additional considerations: Sleep Disturbances: Very light, restless sleeper (tosses and turns)

Partner

  • Middle aged man
  • Back (occasional side) sleeper
  • 5’10”, average build, and between 150-200 lbs.
  • Health Concerns:
    • Chronic pain (general, plus neck & hip)
    • Sleep apnea (using CPAP)
  • Additional considerations: Sleep Disturbances: Sleep Disturbances: Heavier sleeper but sometimes woken by partner movements.

Non-Negotiables

Desired features

  • Emergency Power Down/Shut Off:
    • This safety feature would be a huge point in the favor of a specific product. We have several cats and I want to make sure they couldn’t get hurt by the adjustable base.
    • Also seems like it would be beneficial during power surges, if that isn’t something that’s already a standard built into adjustable bases.
  • Lumar support, adjustable
  • Massage: There are so many iterations of massage that I’ve seen, e.g., dual, integrated, waveform, 3D waves, VibraSense, SoundScape, and various numbers of zones, intensities, and/or modes. How do you cut through the marketing noise to find the functionality?
  • Quiet motor
  • Remote with memory preset buttons:
    • One or more of these: flat, snore, zero gravity
  • Remote with programmable memory buttons. Two or more would be nice, but not a deal breaker if there was only one.
  • Underbed lighting
  • USB ports seem pretty typical with mid to high end adjustable bases.
  • Warranty: A warranty that meets, but preferably exceeds the industry standard
  • White glove delivery, if possible

It would also be nice to have these optional features, if they are worth additional cost:

  • Home Trial: There are a few that have this. Is it worth it to choose one with a home trial over the ones that don’t?
  • Mobile app that can double as a remote
  • Neck/pillow tilt
  • Snore Response: Seems like a handy feature for the bed to automatically adjust when someone snores to help alleviate that.
  • Sonic Massage: I tried it out on the TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Adjustable Base and thought it was nice.
  • Wall hugging: I’m putting this in the optional category as a nice to have. Please let me know if it’s more necessary with my bed frame.
  • Wind down or relaxation functions

Final Thoughts

If you made it this far, I appreciate your time and attention. I could use help with easily digestible information that demonstrates which base would be our best choice and why.

I know that there aren’t a huge number of adjustable base manufacturers, so some of the models listed above may come from the same manufacturer. If you recommend a specific adjustable base, please try to also include the best place to purchase it.

Thanks so much for those that take the time to read and respond.

It’s very difficult to find information on what the deck is made of. @DLX said to make sure the adjustable base decking is plywood and not a wire grid or metal bars, as those tend to be less supportive and can lead to sagging over time.

Does someone have recommendations for adjustable bases with confirmed wood decking? @AdminTMU or anyone else?

Great question. It is unfortunate that a lot of companies do not disclose that information. If you find a couple that you like, we would recommend contacting them and asking. If they are uncertain or do not provide a clear answer, that is usually a good sign to move on.

I’d suggest starting with some of the companies listed on The Mattress Underground that sell adjustable bases.

Typically, most Leggett & Platt models use plywood decking at the time of this writing.

If you are shopping locally, a good test is to push down firmly on the parts that do not bend. It should feel solid and not have gaps as you push down from side to side though you will feel some gaps from head to foot as those are the sections where it bends.

A lot of adjustable bases will be upholstered with a thin polyester fiber over the plywood which is totally normal and not an issue, but some wire-grid ones are upholstered as well so it is best to push down firmly to test.

Also, looking underneath the adjustable base can help let you know what the support structure is. Keep in mind that even with plywood decking, there are usually metal bars underneath to support the plywood.

These are not hard-and-fast rules, but general guidelines that apply most of the time. The less expensive ones tend to be made with a wire grid, like this one, but again some can be upholstered. Also, models that have a vibration feature tend to use plywood for the decking.

I really appreciate the advice. I’ll keep that in mind as I choose between options.

Thanks again and I hope you have a great day!

Ergomotion 6.0 is good if you don’t want to use your bed frame, as it comes with an upholstered bed frame. It is a massive beast and better pay $200 for white glove delivery.

Shop.ergomotion.com is a great place and look for coupons around. Sometimes you can get 40% off.

Also Bedplanet will price match and without sales tax.
