Can someone confirm the actual specifications of the Sparrow and Owl models - what gauge of coils is used, and the ILD of the latex and foam layers? Also, does the Talalay latex used have any certifications from ECO-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, or GREENGUARD Gold?

Here are the confirmed specifications for Nest Bedding’s Sparrow Signature Hybrid and Owl Natural Latex Hybrid (based on the brand’s official product pages and consistent independent testing data as of mid-2026). Note that both models received an upgrade to an 8″ reinforced-edge pocketed coil unit (raising overall height to about 14″) starting around February–April 2026; earlier versions used 6″ coils.

I am struggling as a side sleeper with intense hip pain on all new hybrid mattresses that I have tried, and I learned about the 15.5 and even 16 gauge coils in the market place as the most “givable” or “plush”. So I would wonder if the 14.5 would be too much for me, and if I should stick to finding a mattress that uses 15.5 or 16 gauge coils throughout the mattress. Any thoughts on this? I do need some lower back support, but my hip pain seems to be a massive issue on all new mattresses I’ve tried:
The current mattress I am on that is causing excruciating pain is the Stearns & Foster Lux Esate Plush Pillowtop - not sure if it is known what gauge their coils are. Also tried Saatva RX, and Saatva Classic - not sure if it is known what gauge they use. Also tried the BeautyRest Heavenly Bed equivalent - also not sure if their gauge is known.

Thanks. The Nest Mattress Specs link does not list the gauge of the coils - only whether it’s 6" reinforced or 8" reinforced. But the reply above states both 14.5 gauge coils, and independent testing showing 16 gauge coils. Is there anyway to find out which it might be? It’s possible that I’m too focused on the coil gauges (?), but my sense is that the coil pressure is what is giving me the intense hip pain from side sleeping (at 120lbs, 5’6). If I get something with a softer top layer that cushions me, seems that would have me sinking in closer to the coils and therefore more of the pressure would be exerted back up onto my hip? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
So, I tend to get caught up in coil gauge myself when speaking about mattresses and support systems.
The specific coil gauge itself is probably not the place I would put too much focus. While gauge does affect the feel of a coil unit, it is only one small part of the overall design. A 14.5 gauge coil is not automatically “better” or more pressure relieving than a 16 gauge coil, and the way the coils are configured (coil count, turns, diameter, zoning, foam layers above them, and the overall mattress construction) often matters more than the gauge number by itself, even how the coils are lined up, are they nested like a honeycomb, or lined up in vertical and horizontal rows? The same exact coils often feel more supportive in a mattress when nested in a honeycomb pattern.
I am sure if you called Nest and asked them directly, they would give you the answer, but the bigger question is, what do we do with that information?
If they say the coils are 13.5 gauge or 16.5 gauge, does that automatically make one better than the other? Does one become more responsive or more supportive?
We tend to assume that a 13.5 gauge coil will feel firmer or stiffer than a 16.5 gauge coil, and that may be true in some cases, but the question is, firmer for whom? Someone who weighs 320 lbs may experience that coil very differently than someone who weighs 120 lbs.
There are also other variables. If those 16.5 gauge wires are tightly wound, they can feel very different than a coil made with a wire diameter that is significantly larger or has a different design. Then you have to consider how many coils are in the mattress and how they work together to distribute and support your body’s weight.
Your thinking is correct from a simple physics standpoint. A 4-inch piece of wood would generally be harder to break than a 2-inch piece, but that also depends on the type of wood, how it was processed, its structure, and other factors.
Mattress components work the same way. Individual specifications matter, but they only tell part of the story. The performance comes from how all the components work together.
At your height and weight (120 lbs, 5’6"), it is less likely that you are “bottoming out” into the coils. A more likely issue is a mismatch between your sleeping position and the mattress’s upper comfort layers. Side sleepers need enough surface contouring to allow the shoulder and hip to sink in while maintaining spinal alignment. If the comfort layer is too firm, your hip can take too much localized pressure.
Your concern about adding a softer topper is a reasonable one, but it depends on the type and thickness of the topper. A good pressure-relieving layer does not necessarily bring you closer to the coils, it can actually distribute your weight over a larger area and reduce peak pressure at the hip. The problem would be adding a soft layer that allows excessive sinking without enough support underneath.
Before focusing on the coils, I would look at the entire comfort/support balance. At your weight, a mattress that feels “firm” in the showroom can often create pressure points for side sleeping. A softer comfort layer over the existing mattress may help, but the right solution depends on whether your current issue is too much surface firmness, poor alignment, or a comfort layer that has softened unevenly.
This may be a better way to view this. What do you think?

I am open to the topper idea but I will have to choose a new mattress anyway since I have processed the returns for the Saatva RX and the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Plush PT. I will say that the PT on the Lux Estate did not feel soft at all and did not feel that I was sinking into it at all. I am pretty certain this fits your description of the comfort layer being too firm and giving my hip the localized pressure!
I have purchased two toppers out of absolute desperation - last night I slept on the ProSleep Hybrid 4 inch Fiber/Memory Foam topper on the S&F Lux Estate and it did help with the pain but I woke up so hot. Today I purchased the Serene 3 inch after reading comments throughout the forum. It seems the reviews on the Serene are fairly positive for the lighterweight side sleepers, but am open to all feedback.
(I still have my 2014 Sealy Dr. Green’s all foam, which did not give me any hip pain, but I believe it likely is sagging now, placing me out of alignment, and adding a topper to it probably would not be advisable.)
I tried all latex mattresses and a Paramount Nature Spa Ocean mattress in a show room today. The all latex, with a soft top layer and a medium top layer - felt a bit bouncy and jiggly to me, so I’m not sure how I’d feel with latex on the top after trying it out. The Paramount Nature Spa Ocan mattress felt great - and it’s a luxury firm but no base coils, though I’m sure it’s well broken in from show room effect. Reviews say it shows up firmer. It has 8 layers - foam base with latex and microcoils. Top layer is 1) cotton fabric, 2) then silk/wool/cashmere blend, 2) then cooling gel layer, then 4) high density support foam, then 5) latex, then 6) microcolis, then 7) 8) more foam base. I wonder if the high density support foam being layer 4 and latex layer 5, if this could give too much push back on my hip even?
Net - net, sounds like I might have to choose a mattress and assume I will need to add a foam topper of some nature. So the question is, what would be the best mattress to go with!
