New DIY mattress too firm, causing back pain

After many years of sleeping on, and enjoying plush mattresses, eventually theyd start to sag and cause back pain. This time, we decided to go the DIY route, and we messed up. Back and hips are hurtin!

Purchased this build from Arizona Premium Mattress:
8" Bolsa Coils
My side: 2" medium talalay, then 2" soft talalay
His side: 2" firm talalay, 2" medium talalay
Bamboo Cover.

Ive flipped the 2 inch layers on both sides, trying the softer on top, the firmer on top, and recently added a 2" mattress topper from amazon (non latex…down alternative) to no avail. Lower back still hurting, sometimes also feeling pressure points on hips. I think this thing might just be too firm for us.

I went away for 4 days this past weekend to an Airbnb, and had zero back pain. I contacted the owner today to find out what the mattress was, so I could replicate. He couldnt tell me the exact model, only that its a Serta, soft firmness, with a topper on it also.

I am so determined to make latex work for us, but will certainly need to do a comfort exchange. I would like to avoid having to add a topper if possible, and wonder if I should just go all in on the softness 2"x2" ultra soft on my side, 2"x2" soft on his. I mean it still is only 4 inches of comfort layer of 8" of pretty firm coils. :woman_shrugging:

Please advise! TIA!

Stats:
Me:5’1 yoyo between 155-175 lbs, side/stomach sleeper
Him: 5’11, 175 lbs, all positions

Foundation: Solid as a floor, platform type, no box springs.

The Bolsa coil is not a Firm coil and works well for side sleepers and the 2 layers you have on your side should be a perfect fit based on years of feedback from other customers. That being said if you feel like it’s still too firm then I recommend requesting a comfort exchange if you are still within the 60 day period. Changing out the Medium for a Super soft is the only logical thing to do at this stage.

Hey Ken, thank you for responding to my post! Im about 35 days into my 60 days, but I think instead of doing a comfort exchange, Im going to order a layer of the extra soft talalay, and start experimenting with all the different firmnesses until I can find a combination that works. I’d hate to trade away one of the firmer layers, just in case. Seems its much easier to make a bed softer after the fact, than to make it firmer! I appreciate your time, thank you again.

Agreed, always better to be too firm than too soft up front.

Suggestion: PocketCoilStore.com in Dallas offers a 3" “QuadMini” pocket coil comfort layer using smaller & softer coils than the 8" pocket coils in their mattresses. Cost currently is $365 USD for a Queen size. DIY QuadMini Pocket Coil Springs from Texas Pocket Springs

Owner Matan is fanatical about customer service!
His business is supplying pocket coil mattresses to DIY buyers. Uses a glue-free process to group pockets together (clusters of 4) to provide more stability than isolated pockets, & provides an especially firm double-row of pockets down the sides to make for a more supportive mattress edge.
He does supply mattress covers to hold all your layers together, but not mattress toppers (latex etc.): buy those elsewhere.

Well worth your time to surf over & see what you think.
