In need of a new mattress. For nearly 20 years we had a fairly generic mattress from a local discount furniture store that was just a spring mattress with a maybe 1-2” pillow top. Wife wanted to replace three years ago and we ended up with a pretty generic hybrid at the local HS soccer team fundraising sale that’s got probably 3-4” of memory foam that my wife seemed to love, but I constantly felt like I was sinking in and sometimes not get enough support. We swapped it with a two or three year old IKEA Haugsvar that we had in our daughters bedroom, and I think other than my wife sleeping warm to hot this summer, it’s been great. BUT…it’s deforming on one side. It’s like someone had to have been sitting on the edge of the bed for days.
She’s 150lbs, I’m 170lbs. She’s a back sleeper but will occasionally side, but generally doesn’t move much, and can sometimes sleep hot. I’m a variable - I will go from back to side several times overnight, and I don’t often have temperature issues. We also like the motion control of the Haugsvar, but I think we’re ready to go in a different direction. I’m pretty sure we’d like a hybrid, but would prefer not too much foam or a different material.
Hey krolholio.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum. ![]()
Sorry to hear about the sagging IKEA Haugsvar - it made me laugh that the mattress previously purchased was at a soccer fundraiser. Fundraisers sure have changed since I was a kid! Fond memories of selling overpriced but tasty chocolates here ![]()
I looked into the IKEA Haugsvar to see what’s in it and who we have on our Trusted Member roster with something similar but also made to last.
- Total Height: ~11"
- Comfort Layers:
-
3.1 lb/ft³ memory foam (decent, but still under what we’d recommend for a one-sided mattress)
-
1.7 lb/ft³ polyurethane foam (also under what we’d recommend in our Durability Guidelines)
-
1.5 lb/ft³ polyurethane foam (also under)
-
- Support Core:
-
Pocketed coil system
-
Queen: ~594 springs
-
King: ~783 springs
-
- Cover:
-
Stretch fabric
-
Quilted with polyester, cotton, and viscose wadding
-
Non-woven lining
-
- Design: One-sided (not flippable), rotate regularly
I also saw similar complaints to yours - one sided dips/sagging, ridges appearing in the mattress, etc.
Since you’re not inherently against memory foam, you could look at these options:
Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus (11.25”)
Glacier Sleep Original Hybrid (12”)
GhostBed Classic (11”)
NestBedding Sparrow (13”)
Let me know what questions come up or if there’s one you’ve found in the wild you need some extra eyes on.

@NikkiTMU Thanks for that bit of research. I did manage to figure out what the soccer fundraiser mattress is that I didn’t like - it’s a Beautyrest Silver Hybrid. Not sure if that informs those recommendations because there’s just too much to sink into with the top layer. I think for sleeping it might have been OK, but made ease of movement more difficult than we prefer.
