New Mattress, Looking for Criticism/Advice

Hey Forum, first post here. I want to lead off with a huge thank you to all of the valuable information on the website, without it I would know far less about mattresses in general. Not only did the information on this website provide a solid foundation for me, but it also led me into numerous informational videos on youtube which solidified my knowledge even further.

My wife and myself have already purchased a mattress from Arizona Premium Mattresses, but because I have an insatiable appetite for improvement I would like to hear criticisms or advice from anyone who wants to pitch in.

[hide]I am 5’10"/230 lbs (mesomorph, not obese). My wife is 5’5" and expecting so I won’t be disclosing her weight publicly, but she is generally around 140/150lbs. I’m generally a side sleeper, but that might be because I find my mattresses to be too soft. My wife is a combo sleeper that tries to sleep on her back or stomach generally. I like firm because I sink through soft mattresses, she likes soft mattresses but is starting to desire more support. Both of us have back issues and need extra support with the right amount of pressure relief in order to fall asleep. I sleep very warm, she sleeps somewhat cold.[/hide]

We went with the the All Natural Talalay Mattress from APM with the following specifications:
3" 20-24 ILD [Soft] Talalay Topper
6" Firm (for me) / Medium (for her) Talalay Core

My only concern here is that I will need another layer in between the two for a transition or to add additional support to her side. I don’t know if having a Soft>Firm>Medium layering system would be undesirable so I’m curious of any input.

We bought a new foundation as well for this bed:[spoiler]Zinus Elite 14in Foundation. We went with this model over APM simply because we want the height on the bed. It would be nice to have some storage. [We have been using box springs until recently, they are definitely broken in. Also, it turns out that my side of the bed’s boxspring was UPSIDE DOWN for months, possibly a year, and I was sinking between the boards for a long time]. After reading numerous reviews (and forum posts) regarding this foundation I will be adding at least the following modifications when it comes in:
-Adding Washers between the two halves of the king bed foundation. Some reviewers complained that the only sound coming from the foundation was due to the two halves squeaking when next to each other.
-Adding a coir rug underneath the mattress, on top of the foundation. I tried to shop around and learned quickly that most of the other coir rugs simply resell this product, so I stuck with it.

I am also considering adding additional support between the foundation and the coir rug depending on how I feel about the gaps. I want the mattress to last as long as possible without getting ruined underneath.[/spoiler]

My remaining questions (I may email Ken later in the week because these are targeted questions).

  1. [li]As we discussed on the phone, the top layer will most likely get beat up within 5 years or so due to my BMI. Would rotating the topper every 6mo to a year help with the breakdown?
[li]Would adding a mattress protector ruin the temperature regulating benefits of this mattress? Although I really want to protect my mattress, I am also sick of sleeping incredibly warm (even in the winter I generally have a light blanket. This time of year I struggle to stay comfortable even in A/C).
[li]Does the cover with this arrangement allow room for another layer to be in the mattress, or would I have to get a topper cover/replacement cover to add any additional layers?
  2. What is the general consensus here regarding wool as a mattress layer/topper/comforter? I keep hearing about all of the benefits of wool, but this is usually from biased sources so I am skeptical.
    [/li]

If anyone thinks I missed something please let me know, I look forward to my new mattress and any additional information I can receive.

Let me chime in since it’s our mattress. Rotating the topper is never a bad idea for extended durability. Mattress protectors will cut off air flow so stay away from anything that is waterproof. Wool is a good thing but too much can sleep warm so do not add any additional wool pad. For maximum air flow I personally use a 3" latex topper and cover over my latex mattress instead of inside the cover. For those who sleep hot this is the best solution. In addition I also travel with a 2" latex topper to put over a hotel bed to insure I have enough airflow to sleep comfortably. I’ll be in Vegas this coming week for the summer furniture market and the first thing to go in the truck is my 2" topper and latex pillow. I hate memory foam mainly due to the heat factor and it’s hard to find a hotel that doesn’t have memory foam mattresses these days.
