New SleepEZ latex mattress - first thoughts

The ordering process was simple, especially after I had help here! I followed the recommendations made on my earlier post and ordered the 10" all-latex split king mattress. From top to bottom, we’ve got 3" medium Talalay, 3" medium Dunlop, 3" firm Dunlop. (I also ordered a pair of twinXL Sven & Sons adjustable bed frames to hold the mattresses.)

I received a call from Sleep EZ to confirm my order before they started processing it, just to make sure everything was entered correctly. I appreciated that! I was told they’d get to work building my mattress the following Monday, and it arrived Friday. Quick turn-around, much appreciated!

We had the bed frames delivered and set up, and then got to unbox the new mattresses. I’d definitely call it a 2 person job, as each one was over 100lbs, and FedEx had done a number on the boxes during shipping. However, each one was packaged well, shrink-wrapped tightly and pristine in spite of the beating they took on their way cross-country. Plus, they threw in a pair of shredded-latex pillows as a bonus! They’re soft and springy and felt comfy right out of the packaging. Nice!

Setup wasn’t hard, just heavy. I thought I was going to have to layer everything into the encasements, but they came assembled. Cool. Husband and I immediately lay down and noted how much better it felt than our old, mushy, worn-out memory foam bed.

My first thought once I had the bed made up was that it all looked rather small. We had a deeper mattress on a taller frame, so going to the adjustable bed plus a 10" mattress was a big change. That’s not necessarily a bad thing - I’m short and kind of had to hop up into bed before. But it’s a change we’ll need to get used to.

We played around with the adjustable bed settings for a while. Zero gravity setting feels quite nice! Then I settled down for my first night on the new mattress.

It has terrific support. Unlike my previous mattress! I didn’t sink in to the point where moving was awkward and difficult. I really like the ON the bed feeling, as opposed to IN the bed with memory foam. I stayed ON the mattress as promised, with all the support I’ve been lacking for years! It sleeps much cooler than my old memory foam bed, too. I have a BedJet cooling me down, and of course my linen and percale bedding have an impact on my sleep temperature as well. But I didn’t feel like I was laying in lava anymore. I still give off tons of heat, but it’s not ALL trapped around me the way I was used to. A definite improvement on that front!

That said, even with the medium Talalay as my comfort layer, the mattress is very firm. The support is excellent, especially if I’m laying on my back. That’s how my husband typically sleeps, and he’s quite happy so far. I’m just not sure the comfort is quite dialed in for me, especially as I’m curvy and I mostly sleep on my side. I’m not having any new pain anywhere, but I wake up feeling some discomfort around my hips and upper arm area, and I can tell that will deepen to pain if I don’t make some adjustments. That’s why we went for a latex bed from Sleep EZ. No problem.

All that said, I did sleep pretty well. Better than usual for me - a lifelong insomniac. The fact that the bed wasn’t turning to lava beneath me went a long way towards better sleep. And the support did as well. Amazing how different it feels to lay down and NOT have my hips hammock down deep into the mattress.

We’re thinking of starting by adding a topper. I know we can make changes with Sleep EZ and appreciate how easy they make the process, especially in the first 90 days. We may well end up doing that as well. But I think Husband and I would both appreciate a higher bed, which necessitates a topper anyway. (Unforunately, our bed frames’ legs are already on their highest setting.) Then we can judge whether the mattresses’ support and comfort needs any changing.

It’s only been a few nights, but so far, I’m pleased with our choice. I’ve already slept better and deeper than I have in a while, even though it’s not quite perfect yet. Sleep EZ has been great so far, and I anticipate that continuing. I’m looking forward to even more, and even better, sleep ahead. So far, so good!
