I have been looking for a new mattress for over a year and found TMU through the Mattress Makers on Youtube (sadly, we’re priced out from purchasing from them). I hope someone here can help.
Story
My wife and I have had a hybrid memory foam mattress for 6 years (~$2,000) and it has been horrible for me from day 1; it was good for her for 5 years. I believe that the memory foam is too soft but that the actual coil system is too hard—I think I “melted” through the foam from the start and hit the wires below, simultaneously being engulfed in hot petrochemicals and being pushed by coils; meanwhile, I think the foam initially supported my wife but has now broken down so that even she is hitting the coils.
Help Needed
I need to find a mattress (or DIY option) that will meet the following criteria:
- Naturally-derived materials ONLY (steel, GOLS Dunlop latex, 100% natural Talalay, organic cotton, wool—preferably lots) and NO synthetic foams or “latex” blends
- NO silica/fire-retardant chemicals, glues, or polyester/synthetic layers (OK if coils are wrapped with OEKO-Tex or GOTS certified polypropylene)
- Must sleep COOL/be very breathable
- Edge support is important, motion transfer is NOT
- Suitable for 2x combo (side-dominant) sleepers, 1x <150 lbs and 1x <200 lbs.
- Cannot exceed 12" in height
- If it needs a topper, must be <$1,200; if it would not need a topper, it must be <$1,600.
We are open to both latex-only and hybrid options.
What We Have Tried & Our Experiences
-
Avocado
Eco: The cooling was great and it felt more comfortable than the Green (Firm) for side-sleeping but the edge support isn’t as good. We have concerns about the company having a history of not disclosing synthetics, etc.
Green (Firm): The edge support and cooling were great but it felt a bit too firm for side-sleeping.
Wool Mattress: Edge support and cooling were great again but the mattress was too firm. -
Naturpedic
Verse + Wool Topper: Comfortable for me but much too firm for my wife. It wasn’t as cool.
Trilux: Very comfortable and customizable but not as cool and >$2,000 over budget. -
Local Solid Latex Mattress (Firm) + 4" Wool Topper: This was our favorite setup so far but it was 2x our budget. It wasn’t cool so much as temperature neutral.
-
Local Wool Innerspring Mattress (Extra Firm) + 3" Wool Topper: Much too firm!!!
We’ve tried other mattresses but these are the most illustrative.
We Have Also Considered
- Happsy (Medium-Firm +/- Topper)
- My Green Mattress Kiwi
- Sleep On Latex Medium
- Sleep Essentials AR2 or AR3
- Awara Organic
- Silk & Snow Organic
- SleepEZ or other DIY
I am willing to DIY but haven’t been able to find a wool-based encasement to hold the layers (not for the fire-retardancy but just because we love wool). Recommendations for that would also be welcome.
TL/DR: I need to find a good-quality, non-toxic mattress that sleeps cool and doesn’t exceed $1,200–$1,600 for a queen. Willing to DIY. Would love to support small business.
