Hello!
I ordered a full/double layered DIY latex mattress a few years ago from SleepEZ. I’ve generally been happy with it, but more recently I’ve been developing hip and lower back pain, and have decided I finally need to do something to soften this mattress up.
I’m 6 ft, ~160 pounds, usually a back sleeper, but sometimes (and more recently) prone to trying to sleep on my left side, which is the side with the pain. The current mattress is an 8" custom full: 3" v.firm dunlop, 3" firm dunlop, 2" medium talalay, with the quilted cotton/wool cover. It is indeed very firm, but generally I like this, and I especially like feeling so supported when I sit on the edge. It’s really only in the mornings when it becomes apparent this is too firm for my body as a sleeping surface.
I can see a few options for adjusting this… mostly I’m looking for perspective on how these options would change the feel, and how much or how little they would actually soften things up?
1 - 2" soft talalay topper. Certainly the most simple option. I just worry that I’d sink through this, and it wouldn’t make enough difference for my lower back. There’s also a silly desire to keep every layer actually inside the mattress.
2 - 3" medium dunlop layer. Re-arrange my mattress, put the v.firm dunlop outside and below my mattress atop the wood foundation, and arrange the insides as 3"firm, 3"med, 2" talalay med. Would the v.firm layer still do anything in this arrangement, or provide any sort of support? I’d hate to lose the stable feeling when I sit on the side of my bed.
3 - 2" medium dunlop, 2" soft talalay, new 12" quilted cover. Arrange all the layers into a new mattress as 3"v.firm, 3"firm, 2"med.dunlop, 2"med.talalay, 2"soft.talalay. This is by far the most expensive option, but it sates my OCD keeping everything contained as a single finished piece. But I can’t really figure out how much this option or the previous would actually soften things up.
I suppose it’d also be possible to go with 1, and then carry that forward into option 3 if it wasn’t enough. Again, mostly I’m just looking for opinions on how different these options would feel to lay on.
Thanks!
