Panda DIY Build Advice Requested

Greetings to everyone!

My wife loves Pandas so I called this project as such, but nothing to do with the build just the name. I’m 5’11", 292 lbs and 80% Side/ 20% Back Sleeper. My wife is about 5’8", 190 lbs and 90% Side/ 10% back sleeper. We decided to try the DIY route after buying a costly Sleep# bed, only to end up disappointed by it (we returned it of course).

We bought TPS 8’ (14.75g) and their QuadMini as well, but we are waiting on delivery. I’m trying to decide what layers to work with and have been perusing this site for awhile now. We currently have a 3" memory foam topper but we don’t care for it much and we were looking towards latex. Although, Arizona Prem., does have a HyperGel foam that we were interested in but I digress. I run really hot and my wife cold lol

My wife likes things on the softer end of things and I like medium-firm ish. We both dislike the sinking and being wrapped feeling of memory foam and would like to try and avoid said feeling. In any case, we liked the feeling of Kingsdown Langham Bay ET Plush (Christian Matress Xpress ver.) and the Beautyrest Black LX-Class Plush Hybrid for reference. We know we can’t 100% replicate it but we want to get close or better. (The prefered feeling is that of the Kingsdown). I haven’t purchased any foam layers yet and will probably just get by with the Memory Foam we have until we purchase otherwise.

I can answer any questions but I would appreciate any insight or feedback. We are sticking to King size and we like height, so 15" + is okay (We are aware it can take away from the coils ability to do their work, so less is okay too!) Our current understanding has led us to the following setup:

TPS 8" Quadcoil w/ Firm Sides (14.75g)
TPS 3" QuadMini
Arizona 2" Firm Dunlop
Arizona 2" half medium/soft talalay
Arizona King Bamboo - Wool Zippered Mattress Cover

or forgo the two 2" latex and just go with a 3" half medium/soft talalay.

We do like the quilted feeling of covers but not sure how much that will effect firmness level of the latex. We both love fluff and plush feeling so any recommendations on that end would help too.

That should spec out pretty nicely, I see no reason to change anything. You can always wait to get the cover and try just the half medium half soft but with the quad mini’s it might be too soft and you will need the 2" firm dunlop

My only hesitation is there’s too much on top of the QuadMini so I might suggest just the 2" talalay first before you getting the Dunlap. The 14.75 will be firm so the 3"coil + 3" soft talalay may just hit the spot. That’s 6" inches of comfort above a solid firm base coil unit.
@Arizona_Premium are pros at building mattresses, I’m a pocket coil guy, so I will always tell someone less is more when it comes to a pocket build. When you add layer upon layer on top of a pocket unit you take away from the true purpose of a pocketed coil (independent suspension) .

@Arizona_Premium Hmm… I might consider doing just that. Thank you!

@PCS Well… it kind of lines up with what Arizona Prem. said, meaning I can try just the Talalay first and see how it goes with that. I’ll be sure to update when I get everything, thank you!

Can I get your thoughts on going with Hypurgel Foam over the Talalay?

@PCS Also I had an additional question for you. So, I have this thing…

I did not pick this out… lol but its what we have. Im going to assume your Quadcoils will need something else to help support it… btw the spacing is about 5.7"… any thoughts? I cant return it, and at this point Im stuck with it.

Interesting, what part of it moves? I suggest a thin firm piece of foam on the bottom or a shoddy pad. At the end of the day you just want the coils to have a flat surface to work on. It doesn’t have to be expensive. A recent DIY customer told me they put a peg board on top of their slatted base and it worked out great. The holes added airflow as an added benefit.

Not sure what you mean. I was thinking of using a piece of foam but I don’t have a sense of how firm or thick I would need for it. I tried looking up peg boards but matching the sizing has proven difficult lol

@Arizona_Premium Does Hypurgel have a better feeling of floating rather than sinking, or the “bounce” of Talalay. I’m trying to get a sense for it. I am curious about it.
