Petite-ish side sleeper - Desperate for new queen mattress

I’ve been looking into mattresses for over 1.5 yrs and I’m stuck in analysis paralysis for fear of making another poor choice. I had a king size hybrid for 12yrs+, much longer than I should have had it. The Art Van salesman said it was warrantied for 25 yrs. Not sure of the brand at this point, but the name included ‘king.’ It seemed great in the early years. I know it had some latex in it.

I prefer to sleep on my right side, sometimes on my back. I have some slightly bulging discs in my neck, so I’ve used latex pillows in the past, but recently switched to a Coop original (It’s warm at times). I’ve been dealing with pain in my right hip in the last 2 years. I have had severe insomnia for 15+ years, so now I sleep alone. I opted for a queen size mattress this time around to save money. I’ll mention that I tried to sleep on my back with both recent purchases, but with my neck issues, it hasn’t worked out.

I was hoping for something that would be more eco-friendly. I started at a local Mattress Firm, but wasn’t impressed. Went to a local Tru Sleep which carried a number of the online brands. However, the 2nd time we went, the salesman was honest in telling us they were bought out by American Mattress and couldn’t guarantee anything. I tried Helix, DreamCloud, Brooklyn Bedding, Kingsdown, several latex brands, etc. I liked one of the latex brands, but it was out of my price range. Helix Luxe and Kingsdown seemed like possibilities, but couldn’t pull the trigger. I didn’t care for the feeling of sinking into the memory foam mattresses I tried.

In June, I purchased The Botanical Bliss Queen / Medium / 9 Inches by Plush Beds with the Rize silver adjustable bed. The staff said it was great for side sleepers. It was way too firm, even after I added the “softer” 2" topper they sent for free. My hip pain increased and I developed low back pain too, so I sent it back.

In October, I decided to try the Leesa Legend 12" hybrid. It seems to have compressed and feels too firm. We added a 3" memory form topper for now, not great, but slightly more comfortable.

I’m at a loss as to where to go from here. I’ve looked at so many online mattress companies. I came across this site while on the Spindle website (went there from Consumer Reports). I’ve read through most of the articles here and watched some videos, but I’m struggling to figure out where to go from here.
Some details about me: 5’4", 125-130lbs, 54 yo. I tend to be warm, and prefer my room to be cooler at night. If I sleep 5 hours a night, I feel lucky.

Do petite(ish) side sleepers tend to do better on plush mattresses? Should I avoid latex altogether? Any tips, suggestions, input is greatly appreciated!

Hi perryl,

Welcome - we are glad you found us. You have been on quite a journey with your mattresses!

We offer several latex lines. Latex can sleep fairly cool if it is all-natural or organic. Organic latex is often more breathable than synthetics.

We can make some suggestions, but we wanted to check your price range for a queen bed. That may help others as well.

Thanks!

Thank you for replying!

I am hoping to keep it under $2,000. The Leesa seemed appealing because the cost was ~$1,000, but obviously not the right fit.

Can the Naturepedic hybrids be used with an adjustable base?

Hello Perryl!

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

I see The Clean Bedroom offered a reply as well, but I wanted to add a few things.

Generally speaking, yes. Lighter sleepers sink less deeply into the comfort layers, so plush/softer layers generally allow for that sort of “sinkage” in a lighter sleeper.

Only if you feel it’s not working for you. Have you tried 19ILD Talalay?

King Koil maybe?

I’d love to know where you are in your search and how you’ve progressed over the last week.

Hi Nikki,

Thanks for your response. Honestly, I stopped looking yesterday because I’m so overwhelmed. I’ve looked at so many different brands and sources, including every company listed here.

I don’t want to avoid latex, but I’m worried that it may be too firm, like the PlushBeds one was. Someone recommended the Wink EcoCloud, but the firmness ratings I’ve read have been 5-6.5/10. I can’t say if I’ve tried 19ILD Talalay because I only just learned the latex number rating when I joined here.

From the True Sleep and Art Van inclusions I assume you are in Michigan - east side or west side?

Yes, southeast Michigan

Not all people enjoy the “lifting and pushing” back sensation that latex gives. I personally prefer to sink like 100000 miles into my mattress, but also hate memory foam, making for an exciting time whenever I want a bed or topper

Did you have a look at The Sparrow Signature by nest? They offer a plush option that you may want to inquire about.

Another one to look at would be the DLX Classic in the soft option. I’d definitely reach out to either/both and explain what you’ve mentioned here and ask their thoughts but as someone who also just can’t quite get latex to feel right for me, I feel like these two may be useful recommendations for you.

Thanks, Nikki! I’ll check them out. I don’t like feeling like I’m sinking into memory foam.

Nikki,

I’m curious - if you hate memory foam but can’t quite get latex to feel right, what type of mattress do you have?

Ah, I’m on the west side and don’t know the market over there very well.

I have a traditional pillowtop at the moment! It has started to feel too firm for me as the fibers in the comfort layer begin to compact, though. That said, this mattress is like 20 years old now…so it’s high time I explore something new.

The “upside” to having the chronically-too-firm mattress ailment is that I can generally extend the life of the bed with a topper. It’s just…finding a topper that I like that’s the issue!

Hi, Perry:

I am older than you, about the same size, with similar physical / pain / sleep issues. I went through a couple of “from the store” mattresses that didn’t hack it. I ended up going with a DIY build in organic latex (layers and cover from Latex Mattress Factory) and an adjustable bed frame (Denver Mattress). It’s the closest I’ve come to sleep comfort in years - instead of changing positions every 15 minutes I can now sleep for anywhere from 3 - 6 hours uninterrupted. The experts at LMF can advise you on densities and layers.

Thank you for your input. I reached out to LMF today and I think I may go this route, too. Did you get the wool mattress cover through LMF? If so, did it have an impact on the feel of the mattress?
