Question About "Zoned" Coils or Latex

Hi, all.

The Leggett & Platt Combi-zone is renown for its zoning.

King: 1,414 support coils — 5 Zones of Premium Support
— Perimeter, Top + Bottom: 184 coils (16 gauge, 10 turn fabric encased coils)
— Perimeter, Two Sides: 200 coils (16 gauge, 10 turn fabric encased coils)
— Head + Foot: 616 coils (14 gauge, 5 turn fabric encased coils)
— Center: 414 coils (17 gauge, 10 turn fabric encased coils)

Here is where I am confused: Does the above not indicate that the Center, with 17-gauge coils, is softer than the rest of the mattress? Is it that both your pelvis and lower back are meant to have extra support (and thus be under firm coils), or only your pelvis is meant to be?

Thank you.

These are smaller coils so there are more of them per the same area. As a result, overall it will be firmer and more supportive.

By the way, I recently found out that the wholesale price for Leggett and Platt Quantum Edge Elite Combi-Zone in Canada is
(if you buy a roll of five): full $91, full XL $94, queen $123, king $146 per each. All prices in Canadian dollars. Where were you planning to buy your coils from?

Open to suggestions! I would be happy at that price. My one gripe is that they are known for being overall quite firm, and I would prefer something a bit softer.

As for Quantum Edge Combi-Zone, the only place I know besides Arizona Premium (mattresses.net, diymattress.net) that sells them is this store in Iowa: https://www.pierce-furniture.com/shop-mattresses/mattresses/leggett-platt-inc-quantumedgeelite-quantum-edge-elite.html
If you lived in Toronto, maybe, we could try to band five people together to order at wholesale price.

Or if you want to subdivide the order and ship, that would work as well.

Is this correct? More coils means it is firmer?

Also, is it advisable to have both your pelvis and lower back subject to more firmness?

I don’t have space and tools to unwrap the roll of five and vacuum pack for shipping. Whoever can do that, can make a good business on Ebay or Amazon. I would gladly pay CAD $250-$300 plus shipping within Canada. Right now because of the exchange rate, I would pay at least CAD$550 for queen, while wholesale here is CAD$123. Ouch.

Yes, more coils per area means more force, so more support. And, yes, firmer under hips is great; otherwise, hips sink much lower than shoulders (which are lighter), bending your spine instead of keeping it straight.

Hi, happycat.

My apologies, but I must not be being clear. Let me please re-explain:

I know we need more support (firmness) under our hips.

What I am asking is: Do we ALSO need more support/firmness under the lower back? This does not make sense.

My guess is as follows. When you lay on the floor, your lower back does not touch anything, only your hips and bottom. The same on the mattress; lumbar support will be determined by comfort layers and how deep your bottom sinks into the mattress. Another points is most mattress manufacturers can not make continuous adjustment, so that have to cutoff somewhere, like middle third of the mattress. People are also different, so this is like one size fits all.

Thank you. This is exactly my issue: rounded back when I try to sleep on my back. I am thin, though. How do I know if zoning will help me? That is why I think I need softer back coils and firmer pelvis, but I would imagine this is very difficult to get right as both are located so close together.

If you are back sleeper, and you feel comfortable lying on the floor (on something soft), you can go for Quantum Edge Elite Bolsa instead, which has firmer pre-compressed coils and no zoning. It is cheaper too. You will need a good comfort layer on top, e.g. 3’’ latex topper. The heavier you are the softer latex topper should be, but I think around 25 ild would work for most people. I would go for 20 ild, which you can easily firm up with an appropriate cover.

To extend the notion of zoned coil vs latex. Here’s some of my experiences and me looking for a new mattress

I purchased a Flobeds vzone latex mattress 3-4 years ago and it’s been pretty disappointing. While the vzone does give some relief in the shoulder it’s not nearly enough and pretty much I’ve been told there are no further options. The mattress needs to be constantly opened up and latex rotated. It’s durability has been destroyed pretty much. While the much denser latex support cores still do their jobs. any of the top 3 layers are essentially useless at this point and soon became useless after 1.5 years.

I’d like recommendations for a new mattress. I’m a big fellow (340lbs) who has very wide shoulders. I need proper hip support as well as shoulder comfort. If my hips aren’t supported my lower back twists and there goes the day. Normally I sleep on my side and I do too sleep hot.

Looking for a zoned coil hybrid mattress with good pressure relief. Good support at the hip for a big guy and great shoulder pressure relief. The shoulder relief is critical as now my shoulder is almost destroyed because of the lack of give on these previous mattresses. I may as well just sleep on the floor with a futon pad.

Hoping for any advice. It seems most big and tall mattresses are not zoned which I find very odd.

Thanks

I’ve decided already that latex just doesn’t have the characteristics I desire with pressure relief.

More coils means it’s firmer in the lumbar area. You align yourself so that your back is in the zoned section and pelvis is below that.

I don’t really think I can help you since you don’t believe latex has the characteristics you desire and I am a latex specialist. Let me just throw this out there however, someone your size is going to have problems with soft foam of any kind. It’s just not going to last as long as something firmer. That’s just how foam is. For example, our soft latex will hold up very well for someone under 200 lbs and I’m a perfect example. My own soft all latex mattress is over 18 years old and still going strong. That would not be the case for someone 340 lbs. The weight of any foam equals durability and softer foams don’t have the same weight usually of firmer foams. I suspect this is why you had issues with the FloBeds latex. I understand your needs but you just need to realize that those needs will require frequent changing of the top layer or layers. We do sell the very best zoned pocket coil made Combi-Zone Pocket Coil by Leggett and Platt, Save Big with DIY Latex Mattress Components, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products and you might be a good candidate for a DIY mattress build using that coil as your starting point and adding layers over it.

Is there a zoned option to Combi-Zone Pocket Coil by Leggett and Platt, Save Big with DIY Latex Mattress Components, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products

Thanks, all very good info.

I would have thought the firmer coils would align with where you put your hips. I guess this is wrong?

Does anyone know where I could buy a Combi-Zone Pocket Coil by Leggett and Platt in a twin size?

Thank you!

I don’t know where to buy them, but you can order a mattress in any size that uses LP QE coils from the member of this website, Yankee Mattress Factory: https://custommattressmakers.com/
They use 8’’ QE Bolsa, but you can custom order a version with Combi.
