Questions about Sleep EZ layers, foundation, and frame

Hi Sleep EZ,

We are considering placing an order for a split Sleep EZ mattress in the next day or two. I called the factory yesterday with some questions, but we aren’t feeling confidant yet with the information we have enough to pull the trigger on the purchase. I hope someone from Sleep EZ can give us some detailed input, and welcome any other folks who can offer input regarding their experience as well.

  1. About the layers:

I have fibromyalgia and scoliosis, I’m a side sleeper, 5’3” 145 lbs. I don’t like soft mattresses.

My husband has back “issues”: a tight muscle that spasms and can lock up if he does physical activity in bent positions (ie: yard work). He is mainly side and stomach sleeper. 5’7” 145 lbs.

We have had our current mattress for about 15 years, maybe more. It was manufactured by a company called Jaffco, and looking online I see that they were one of the first in the “bed in a box” industry. I don’t know what kind of latex, but we both like it. There is no “sinking in” feeling with this mattress, it is more a feeling of sleeping “on top” of the mattress.

My husband thinks he would prefer something with more give in it, so the top talalay soft layer may work for him. For myself, I wonder if a medium talalay or perhaps a soft dunlop might be better? I prefer a surface similar to what we are sleeping on now, a feeling of sleeping “on” and not sinking into it.

  1. Foundation: Currently, we have a foundation that is resting on a metal frame. The foundation fabric shows signs of some mildew spots/aging/yellowing and is very dusty. We are considering purchasing your foundation along with the mattress. I see that it is not returnable, so a few questions:
  • it does not have a cloth cover over the slats and our current one does. I wonder what the reason is to have that vs. not having it.
  • Also, any customer issues with noise, squeaky-ness or other issues? My understanding is that not all foundations are created equal.
  1. The metal frame we are using seems to have worked fine so far with the current mattress. It is supported in 6 places: 3 legs at the foot and 3 legs at the head of the frame. It does NOT have a supportive bar across the middle such as the one Sleep EZ sells. We are wondering if we need to replace the metal frame?

P.S. My husband sleeps warm. I understand that latex sleeps cooler than other options, but any recommendations regarding sheets/bedding that might help with that would be greatly appreciated.

@Sleep_EZ

Hello, and thank you for reaching out!

I believe it may have been me you spoke with the other day—I’m happy to provide the same information here in writing for your convenience.

To begin, I want to note that while we’re always glad to offer guidance, we don’t provide recommendations based on chronic medical conditions, as we’re not medical professionals. If you have specific concerns related to a medical issue, we always recommend consulting with your doctor for advice.

Our mattress recommendations are primarily based on body weight and sleeping position. To help with this, we offer a mattress configurator tool on both our Natural and Organic mattress pages. You can input your height, weight, and primary sleep positions, and it will generate a recommendation. Since about 95% of our sales are online, this tool has been essential—and we’ve seen an 89% success rate with customers who follow its suggestions (meaning no need for exchanges in nearly 9 out of 10 cases).

Recommended Setup Based on Your Info

Based on what you’ve shared, I would recommend the 10" Organic mattress model, which includes:

  • 3" Soft Talalay latex
  • 3" Medium GOLS Dunlop latex
  • 3" Firm GOLS Dunlop latex
All encased in a quilted organic cotton and wool zippered cover.

We use Talalay on the top layer because it’s more open-celled than Dunlop, making it softer, more breathable, and ideal for pressure relief and a cooler sleep surface. Dunlop, being denser and firmer, is perfect for support in the deeper layers.

For both you and your husband, we recommend the Soft (Talalay) / Medium (Dunlop) / Firm (Dunlop) setup. This is ideal for side and back sleepers under approximately 185 lbs, offering a balance of contour, pressure relief, and stable support.

A Note on Stomach vs. Side Sleeping

Side and stomach sleeping require very different firmness levels. Side sleeping concentrates pressure at the shoulders and hips and requires contour and softness. In contrast, stomach sleeping needs a firm surface to avoid spinal misalignment and midsection sinkage, which can lead to back pain. Because of this, no single mattress setup can fully accommodate both side and stomach sleeping positions.

The configuration we’ve recommended is based on your husband’s preference for side sleeping, which is generally more demanding in terms of pressure relief.

Split Layer Customization

To maximize comfort and flexibility, I recommend ordering the mattress with split layers on both sides. This allows each of you to adjust your side independently if needed. For example, if you later feel your side is too soft or too firm, you could reconfigure to S/F/M or M/S/F without affecting your partner’s setup.

90-Day Layer Exchange Policy

All of our Organic mattresses come with a 90-day comfort exchange policy. You may exchange one layer at a time (or two split layers) as many times as needed within the window. The first exchange has a flat $30 shipping fee. Any additional exchanges would be at the actual cost of shipping (typically $25–$65 depending on your location).
Our Ironwood slatted wood foundations feature upholstered side rails, while the slats themselves are not covered. The slats have a smooth, finished surface, so no additional cover is necessary—and this also helps promote better airflow and breathability.

As far as the foundations are concerned, we haven’t received any feedback regarding noise issues with our wood foundations. I personally have two sets in my own home, and I’ve never experienced any noise concerns with them either.

I hope this information is helpful! Please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-710-9846 or reply to this email with any additional questions. We’re happy to help however we can.

Thanks again, and have a fantastic day!
