Hi!
My mom has severe joint pain and lower back pain when she wakes up each morning. She’s primarily a side sleeper, though she sometimes sleeps on her back.
She’s 5’1” and weighs 110 lbs.
She prefers a firmer feel, and we’ve been considering a hybrid mattress with a latex topper, but we’re not sure if that would be the best option.
We just want to help her get a good night’s sleep. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for reaching out on behalf of your mother. Waking up with severe joint and lower back pain is a terrible way to start the day, so it’s wonderful that you are actively seeking a real solution for her.
As a chiropractor and mattress designer, I’ve spent over two decades focused on creating mattresses that solve chronic pain and alignment issues.
Based on your mother’s specific needs—a petite side/back sleeper who prefers a firmer feel but needs significant joint and lower back relief—I strongly recommend the Back Science Series 2 Hybrid mattress.
Here is our take on why the Series 2 is often a better solution than trying to pair a firm hybrid with a separate latex topper:
- Targeted Lumbar Support: Your mother’s lower back pain suggests she needs active support to maintain spinal alignment. The Series 2 features our patent pending Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support system. This technology reinforces the core of the mattress precisely under the lumbar region and hips, preventing the sinking that leads to lower back pain. This feature is engineered to address alignment better than adding a uniform topper to a non-zoned coil system.
- The Right Firmness Balance: The Series 2 is rated as a “luxury-firm” feel. This is ideal because it satisfies her preference for firmness (supportive feel) while still providing the necessary pressure relief. A simple firm coil bed combined with a topper can often be too hard beneath the top layer. Our hypergel comfort layers cushion her joints and shoulders (critical for a side sleeper) while the Lumbar-Flex system ensures her 110lb frame stays perfectly level.
- Customization is Key: We understand that even the best recommendation might need fine-tuning. We offer a 365-night sleep trial. If the mattress isn’t absolutely perfect, our GripLock Modular cover system allows for free comfort customizations where we can adjust the internal layers to fine-tune the feel, ensuring her joint and back pain are fully addressed.
We are confident that the Back Science Series 2 Hybrid offers the precise support and comfort balance your mother needs.

Hi @Greendino - thank you for the info. I will try to keep it short and sweet!
If you want the mattress and latex topper all in one purchase - our Duo Latex mattress would be perfect. Our Duo design separates the mattress support and the latex comfort so the latex topper can be replaced over time. It also allows us to adjust the firmness if needed during the 100 Night Trial.
The second option would be to purchase our Classic Hybrid 12" Cushion-Firm or Extra-Firm and then add a latex topper to one of those options. These are flippable, firm mattresses with more traditional feels and we have customer use latex toppers on them all the time.
Happy to answer any questions!
