Hi there! First post as a (potential) DIY builder.

We currently have a Queen-size Polysleep mattress, and while it’s been ok, we both toss and turn through the nights. In my case, I’ve always had completely numb arms, which leads me to try sleeping on my back for a few minutes, but then I always go back to the side.

I’ve read throug online mattress review sites a couple times in the past year, without finding one that would convince me it would be better. But these past few days, I have caught myself diving into latex DIYs these past few days. I think I’m willing to try!

Before I go further: I’m 5’11”, 155lbs, and partner is 5’6”, 130lbs, both side sleepers.

Being in Canada, sourcing is complicated, but I found 3 options I’d like to get feedback on.

Through MFC of course, but apart from the deciding on the layers themselves (see below my current idea), all I’m missing is the last 2in Talalay layer I’m looking for (saw a post saying MFC now had one, but must’ve been many months ago). Any thoughts?

In terms of layers, I was thinking 4x2… but being new to all this, it keeps changing! Feel free to provide comments and recommendations (switching the bottom base layer to HR or HD foam instead to reduce cost? Is 4x2 a good idea? What could be improved?)

2" Dunlop 40 ILD
2" Dunlop 30 ILD
2" Dunlop 20 ILD
2" Talalay (TBD)

For similar pricing (and I’m guessing I’ll have trouble convincing my partner to spend more than $2000 CAD… and moving to a King is how I’ll push her towards a need for a replacement), I found these two locally - any thoughts?

Yes, 4 x 2" organic dunlop latex is a good idea and will make for a comfortable mattress but you can also go thicker and get good results. You can also choose HD or HR foam for the bottom layers (if off-gassing is not an issue for you). This will lower your cost and offer you similar comfort if you place a latex layer on top of the assembly.

You mention that your partner does not want to spend more than $2000? The 2 models that you present are over $3000 + taxes? and are made with blended Talalay which will off-gas

If you want to stay under your $2000 budget you can make your own 10" mattress with high density 2 lb foam from our DIY mattress section . Choose 4" firm / 40 ILD and 4" medium 30 ILD and add a 2" organic dunlop latex layer on top. You can wrap it up with a Bamboo cover. The total for this is $1806 taxes and shipping included.

Indeed, it looks like I won’t be able to get an all latex for around $2,000 CAD… either I accept that, or I try to convince my partner that another $1,000 over the course of its useful life is worth it. We’ll see!

I’ll try to go test some latex mattresses in the region in the next few weeks before we make a decision, but it still looks to me like for our situation (relatively lightweight side sleepers looking for pressure relief), Talalay might be worth it compared to Dunlop. Plus, I can’t help thinking about the side benefits it seems to bring for the other activity done on the mattress, apart from sleeping :wink:

Anyways, I’ll keep looking for 2-3in soft Talalay layers/toppers for a DIY build to complement an MFC-supplied DIY - and in the meantime, keep trying to convince my partner that $3,000 is worth it.

I’ll update this thread if/when there’s positive news.

Hi Mario,

I finally convinced my partner to invest, and we’re down to a few all-latex options.

A good one is to leverage your Talalay topper on top of an all-Dunlop mattress. But again, I’m getting lost in the possibilities!

For lightweight (21 BMI) side sleepers, including myself with a numb arm that wakes me up at night and forces me to sleep on my back, what would you recommend as layers?

A few options I see are the following:

Option 1: 2in 40ILD, 4in 30ILD, with 3in Talalay topper

Option 2: 2in 40ILD, 2in 30ILD, 2in 20ILD, with 2in Talalay topper

Option 3: 4in 40ILD, 2in 30ILD, 3in Talalay topper

Option 4: 6in 40ILD, 2in 20ILD, 2in Talalay topper

In other words: how thick should the core be? What about the transition layer? And can the comfort layer be too soft and too thick in our case (4in at or below 20ILD)? I feel like if 3in options were available, that’s what I would go with, but with 2 inches, I have trouble deciding what’s best (and 4+4+3 sounds a bit overkill)

I like your option 3 and would like to suggest a few more.

Here are some to consider for side sleepers. I’ve ranked them from soft to firm:

1- 2 x 2" Dunlop firm / 3" Dunlop medium / 3" Talalay soft (softest)
1- 2 x 2" Dunlop firm 40 ILD / 2" Dunlop medium / 3" Soft Talalay top (medium)
2- 2 x 2" Dunlop firm / 3" Dunlop medium / 2" Talalay soft (firmer)

Ah, sounds good! 3in for each layer would be perfect, I’ll wait for the update!

While we’re here: any chance you have a medium 3in Talalay layer available vs Dunlop?

Oh, and for the Talalay topper, I’m now wondering if I should plan to include it “inside” a 9in cover, or should I instead get a 6in cover and add the topper on top of the 6in mattress?

The 3" firm 40 ILD Dunlop has been added to latex topper page

We can get 3" Talalay in medium, please contact us to get a quote.

The mattress will feel plusher if you place the top layer outside the mattress cover as a topper. If you want a firmer feel, then place it inside the mattress cover.
