I am 5’6" and about 140 lbs. I am a side sleeper and like softer mattresses. The configuration for a 9" or 10" for me turns out to be Firm, Med, Soft Talalay. However, I worry that I will need to use another lay of Soft Talalay in order to like my mattress. I don’t want my mattress to be too thick either. Should I go with the 9" Firm Dunlop, Med Dunlop, Soft Talalay and expect to use another Soft Talalay topper or would I be fine with a 9" mattress with Firm Dunlop, Med Talalay, Soft Talalay and no extra topper?
Hello!
Thank you for reaching out! Based on the details you’ve provided, I agree that the Soft Talalay over Medium Dunlop over Firm Dunlop (S/M/F) configuration is an excellent place to start.
I recommend going with the 10" model rather than the 9" model, as the 10" version includes a 3" soft Talalay comfort layer, compared to the 2" layer in the 9" model. That extra inch provides a noticeably more plush, pressure-relieving surface—ideal for added comfort.
The S/M/F setup is especially well-suited for side and/or back sleepers under approximately 185 lbs. In fact, we’ve seen an 89% success rate with this configuration for sleepers in that weight range—meaning the vast majority of customers do not need to exchange a layer or return their mattress. It strikes a great balance between contouring comfort on top and solid support underneath.
It’s also quite rare for customers to need an additional topper to achieve a softer feel. However, if the mattress does end up feeling a bit too firm for your liking, our Organic mattress models come with a 90-day comfort exchange policy. This allows you to exchange any layer for a softer (or firmer) option if needed. Your first exchange would be just a flat $30 shipping fee, and swapping out the comfort layer is often all that’s needed to fine-tune your sleep experience.
Feel free to reach out any time if you have more questions—we’re happy to help!
Have a terrific day!
Thank you for your response. The SleepEZ team called me and I decided to go with 2" firm dunlop on the bottom followed by 3" medium talalay and 3" soft talalay on top. Hopefeully this will be a good combination for me. I read many reviews that said the Firm, Medium dunlop with Soft Talalay topper often was still too firm for people so that is why I am going with med talalay in the middle. The associate advised me to bring the 2" layer to the bottom of the mattress and I’m really glad because I didn’t even think about that option.
I think you made a great choice! If you’re looking for a slightly softer overall feel, swapping the medium Dunlop for a Talalay layer in the second position will definitely help achieve that.
Sleep on it for a week or two and let us know how it feels—we’re here if you have any questions in the meantime. Enjoy your new mattress!
