Tried so many, in pain and need help!

I am a 62 year-old female, 5‘8“, 120 pounds. I am a side sleeper, almost exclusively.

I’ve been happily sleeping on a Wink Softer bed for six years but suddenly I started experiencing hip pain on both sides every night. I cannot tolerate sleeping in this bed any longer.

In my search for a new mattress, I have tried several at this point. My first attempt was the DLX classic with a soft comfort layer. This was not a good bed for me so I replaced the comfort layer with medium latex and immediately hated it. My back is super painful sleeping on latex, or anything even remotely firm for that matter.

Next I moved onto Engineered Sleep with a soft comfort layer. I was unable to be comfortable in that mattress either and tried many configurations, including an additional comfort layer they custom-made for me, which was closer to a medium firmness. This gave me one of the worst backaches I’ve had in six years.

Most recently, I tried the Hellix Sunset Luxe which was described as soft, but to me, it was not soft at all, and I was unable to sleep more than one night in it, again because of severe backache.

I don’t know what to try next. There are several beds that I’m interested in, but they are not able to be delivered here in Florida. The bed I’m most intrigued with is the Capitol One Macinaw Ultra Plush but it cannot be shipped to Florida.

I have tried latex in various forms several times and do not like it. I also do not like memory foam. I’m pretty sure that a hybrid mattress is for me, but I just can’t find the right combination of softness and support for my hips. And anything other than a really soft comfort layer gives me terrible back pain.

I think I am only able to order mattresses that are able to be shipped in a box. I don’t live near any major manufacturer of quality mattresses.

I’m considering trying the softest version from Brooklyn Bedding but after this experience most recently with the Helix mattress, I’m gun shy about dealing with them. Plus, it’s hard talking to Brooklyn bedding now that they are not privately owned. I feel like when I call them I’m just talking to a sales person who really doesn’t know much about their mattresses, and just recommends the most popular mattress for just me without taking my back and hip problems into account. I’ve spoken to them several times when they didn’t even ask my height or weight and that did not engender confidence.

I need to order a new mattress immediately. I have spent tons of time here at the mattress, underground, learning about all the mattress things. I feel like I’m a fairly informed mattress consumer at this point, but the decision fatigue plus my back and hip pain is killing me.

Any suggestions on where to turn next would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help, Lisa.

Look into BackScience 2 and 3.

The comfort layer of HyperGel is truly amazing.

Unfortunately I am unable to offer any advice since you seemed to have ruled out latex as an option and that is what we specialize in.

Hi Theslater5.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum

I’ve tagged a few of our Trusted Members who can hopefully jump in with some solid ideas and feedback as well.

It sounds like you’ve already done a thoughtful job narrowing things down, and you’ve got a really clear sense of what you like (and don’t like). That’s always a great starting point. In terms of finding something comparable at a lower price point, that’s where the community (and the folks I tagged) can offer some really good insight on feel similarities, construction differences and where the meaningful trade-offs tend to be.

Once we hear from a few of them, we can help you get a shortlist together that lines up with your comfort needs, budget and delivery requirements.

Also, @foxmattress is in Florida and may have some products that fit your needs as well!

Hello Lisa,

Thank you for posting and sharing your journey. It sounds incredibly frustrating to have spent so much time researching and testing mattresses only to end up with severe back and hip pain. I deeply sympathize with the decision fatigue and discomfort you are feeling.

As a chiropractor and mattress designer, I understand why you’ve had so many failures: at your light weight (120 lbs), almost every mattress you tried, since the latex comfort layers of these mattresses simply did not compress enough to allow your hips and shoulders to sink in, leaving your more sensitive joints painfully compressed and/or not allowing counterbalance support that would produce the alignment that you need..

Given your specific situation—exclusive side sleeping, needing extreme plushness, disliking latex and the feel of surface memory foam, I believe that the Back Science Series 3 Hybrid mattress pre-customized to be softer with additional hypergel would be best for your specific situation:.

Here is our take on why the overall Series 3 with a softer configuration would be tailor-made for you:

Extreme Pressure Relief is Necessary: The Series 3 is our medium overall firmness model, specifically designed with the thickest, most luxurious comfort layers of buoyant Hypergel foam (not memory foam, and not latex). In your case we can add additional layering to assist with your very low weight in terms of pounds per square inch with is essential to allow your hips and shoulders to immediately sink and offer the additional cushioning you will need to prevent the excessive pressure in the hips.

Support Without the Firmness: While you need softness, you don’t want to sacrifice support. The Series 3 uses our patent pending Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support. This system ensures that while your hips and shoulders get the plush relief they need, your spine is reinforced in the midsection, preventing the sagging that caused your back pain on softer, unzoned mattresses.

Customization is Your Safety Net: You are right to be “gun shy” about buying online. We offer a 365-night sleep trial. If the Series 3 needs any minor adjustment, our GripLock Modular cover system allows for free comfort customizations (we send you new layers to swap in), ensuring that your specific hip and back problems are solved without the stress of a full return.

Logistics (Immediate Order/Shipping): We understand you need to order immediately, and we ship to Florida. While our hybrid mattresses are not shipped compressed in a small box (as we don’t want to compromise the integrity of our high-quality coils), we can get you scheduled for delivery quickly.

I encourage you to look closely at the Series 3. If you’d like to discuss your measurements, past failures, and the best path forward, please feel free to call us directly at 800 667-1969, since in this case, you would need to order directly from our customer service team, so we can offer that specialized pre-customization.

Thanks!
