My current mattress has 3" 30ild dunlop on top of 3" 44ild dunlop, on top of a flat (plywood) platform bed. The mattress currently has a thin layer of polyester and a mattress protector covering it, but once I’m satisfied I have the right configuration I plan to buy a 4-way stretch mattress cover. I’m a combo back/side sleeper, 215 lbs, 5’10".
I’m actually really happy with the current set up, but just need to tweak it a bit. Even though I don’t really sink into the mattress at all, it more or less conforms in either position and I don’t have any aches or pains in the morning. I do get a feeling that the mattress maybe is a bit too thin (I’m not really sure how to describe the feeling other than that, maybe that it’s a bit too hard when I quickly shift my weight, like when I first lay down). I also think I’d like to sink into the top a bit more, particularly when I’m laying on my side.
Based on what I’ve read, I think I’d like the feel of talalay. I’m trying to decide between getting 3" of the 28 ild, or if I should go for something softer and/or thinner given how much I like the current feel of the mattress and the way that I’d like to tweak it.
Do you have any recommendations?

Edit: My first impressions for the first few nights after adding the medium dunlop (which replaced a bunch of memory foam) was that the mattress was pretty close in feel to whatever my sweet spot is, but for whatever reason it felt extra firm last night and I couldn’t find a position that didn’t put some strain on my hips or shoulders.
I think I actually want it to be a lot softer, especially when I’m on my side, but I’ve had trouble with lower back pain from lack of support on other mattresses I’ve tried in the past and part of me is worried a too soft or too thick addition will push me back into that lower back pain territory.
