My wife (40 yo / 5’ 4” / 110lbs / side sleeper) and I (37 yo / 6’ 0” / 170lbs / side sleeper) thought we had this whole mattress thing figured out, but apparently not. Thus, coming here hoping for some direction.
A year ago we purchased a hybrid mattress from one of the expert vendors on this site. Hybrid in that the main support is provided by coils, then micro coils, and a 1.5” foam top. Felt great in the store, maybe a little on the firm side when we received it, but we were happy. We received fantastic service and a high quality mattress, just ultimately proving to not be the mattress for us. Don’t want to name the company for as don’t believe they deserve any negative review.
Roughly 6 months in we realized we weren’t waking up fully rested and had a few minor aches in the shoulders and hips that weren’t going away. By this point we were outside of the return window. We decided to go the topper route to see if that would solve our issues. First tried a Viscosoft 3” high density memory foam topper. That experiment lasted about a month and felt worse in the tired department and caused low back pain in both of us. So went the opposite direction and got a 2” Dunlop latex topper. This has improved sleep overall but still not waking up rested. And wife still having reoccurring shoulder pain on top of not loving the responsiveness of the latex. With the latex topper I have been struggling to find a pillow to allow me to not wake up with neck pain. And I wake up and have to roll over at least 4 times a night.
So the questions are:
• Where do we go from here?
• Pillowtop topper?
• New mattress? Start over or suggestions on shortcuts to the golden ticket? Budget would be ~$2000
• Neck pain more a function of pillow or mattress? Or combo?
• When side sleeping, is it possible to sleep on one side all night? Should I bite the bullet and train myself to be a back sleeper?
