I think you’re overthinking this a bit. The biggest piece of information in your post is that you’re both 220+ lbs.
If it were me, I wouldn’t be shopping the general mattress market and trying to find a conventional hybrid that happens to work for you. I’d start with mattresses specifically designed around larger sleepers.
The mattress I would have looked at first is the Titan Plus Elite. It’s in your price range, it’s specifically designed for plus-size sleepers, and it has a much more substantial comfort system than the typical “heavy-duty” mattress along with a robust support system. That’s important because you don’t want a mattress that simply gives you more support underneath; you want enough cushioning above that support to get the cradle you’re accustomed to from memory foam.
What I really like about this mattress is that the comfort system uses a microcoil layer in place of one of the memory foam layers. That helps keep the mattress cooler while still allowing it to contour nicely to the body.
For reference, I am 6’ and 220 lbs now (I was 250+), and when I tested this mattress when it was introduced at the 2024 Las Vegas Market Trade Show, I thought it was so comfortable that I ordered one for our guest room. It works very well for me, as well as my wife, who is only 5’4" and 135 lbs. We both like firm mattresses, but this one had a more luxurious feel while still being very supportive. We sleep on the Plank Luxe, which is quite firm and has a similar support system, but the Titan Elite has a much more forgiving comfort system.
I would suggest the Thermobalance Elite here too, but unfortunately it is outside your price range.
That’s also why I wouldn’t necessarily jump back to an inexpensive all-foam mattress. You already know you like that deep memory-foam feel, but at your weights, you need a support system that can keep everything aligned underneath that cushioning. The trick is getting both: enough material on top to let your shoulders and hips sink in, while having enough resilient support underneath to keep your pelvis from dropping too far.
Your Aurora Luxe is a good example of why mattress testing can be misleading. You loved it in the showroom, the pressure relief is good, yet after 70 nights you’re still getting that “sleeping on top of the coils” sensation and waking up with back pain.
That tells me the issue isn’t simply that you need something softer. It’s that the overall construction isn’t giving you the type of transition and cradle your bodies need.
The Titan Plus Elite would be my first place to look because the entire mattress is built around the needs of heavier sleepers rather than trying to adapt a conventional luxury hybrid to them.
You also need to consider your wife’s stomach sleeping. I wouldn’t want to put two 220+ lb sleepers on something extremely soft just to recreate the old memory-foam cradle. You want cushioning for side sleeping, but you still need enough support to keep her hips from sinking excessively when she’s on her stomach.
So I’d stop looking at 100 different mattresses and start with the plus-size category. The Titan Plus Elite would be at the top of my list in your budget, and then I’d compare a couple of other mattresses specifically designed for heavier sleepers against it.
And don’t beat yourselves up over the fact that you loved the Aurora in the store. That’s incredibly common. Ten minutes on a mattress doesn’t tell you what two people are going to experience after sleeping on it for 70 nights.
Finally, could I run off a dozen mattresses that would likely work for you in your price range or close to it? Yes, most certainly. TMU has a host of Trusted Members that offer mattresses in the $1,500 price range, give or take, that would satisfy your requirements. Particularly, those independent mattress crafters, they can design a mattress specifically around your needs.
But since you liked the original feel of the Aurora, I am fairly confident you would like its sister better, the Titan Plus Elite.
Perhaps the store where you tested the Aurora also offers the Titan version. If so, give it a try. Just keep in mind that the initial test is useful, but the longer-term test is ultimately much more meaningful.
