Need recommendations for a mattress for a plus size couple

As the title says, looking for some recommendations. I am 6’1” and around 350 lbs and my fiancé is around 5’7” (I think) and about 260 lbs. I am primarily a stomach sleeper with some side sleeping mixed in a bit. She is a side sleeper for the most part.

We currently have a queen size hybrid mattress from Luma Sleep that has a medium firmness Talalay topper on it, from Luma Sleep as well. We do like this bed quite a bit, but we want to upsize to a king instead. We would go with Luma again, but two problems….one being that they are no longer in business and the second is that we really dislike having a topper. The thing just won’t stay in place, and it shifts downward toward the foot of the bed, so if I don’t pull it back up our pillows end up getting sucked into the void at the head of the bed where the topper used to be.

I was looking at the Big Fig offerings and the Luxe seemed like it would work but I’m seeing reviews on their site that even the Luxe is pretty dang firm as well. We have gotten spoiled by the talalay topper and don’t want something too firm, but need something supportive at the same time.

The Titan Plus Elite looked like it might fit the bill but apparently it has very poor edge support and the cover is really slippery and people saying they have a hard time keeping sheets on the bed.

I want to avoid any big box brands because they all suck, but just don’t know what would fit us the best.

Any suggestions?

Hi Largefarva and thanks for reaching out on this! You might want to consider the 13" organic mattress by Sleep EZ - https://sleepez.com/product/organic-latex-mattress/

The organic and natural mattresses (the Select Sleep mattresses) are our flagship products. They’re fully customizable, meaning you can order the mattress to be as soft or as firm as you’d like. They’re also fully adjustable, meaning you can change the softness, firmness, back support, pressure relief, etc. AFTER you get the mattress in your home. To be more specific, the 10” is our most popular, and these mattresses normally go out with three 3" layers of different firmnesses - normally the softest layer (or the cushion & contour layer) is on top and the supportive layers are on the bottom. This helps ensure our customers get the right balance of contour for their hips and shoulders but also support for their lower back. If you start with a certain setup and find that it’s too soft, you can unzip the cover and rearrange the layers to get a firmer feel out of the mattress, or you can exchange a layer to make it softer. Additionally, latex mattresses typically last 20 years. If, in 5 or 10 or 15 years you decide you want a softer or firmer mattress you would only have to buy a new layer instead of an entirely new mattress. Lastly, if the mattress starts to break down in 15 – 20 years, it’s normally the top layer that breaks down first, and at that point you can likely just buy a new top layer of latex instead of a whole new mattress and get an additional 8-10 years out of the mattress.

Furthermore, queen, king, and cal king mattresses are available with what we call “split layers,” which means you can have us cut the layers down the middle (from head to foot) so that you can have a different feel / firmness on your side versus your partner’s side, and you can adjust each side independently over the 20 year lifetime of the mattress. About 95% of our mattresses go out with all split layers from top to bottom, and we get zero complaints on being able to feel the split and we get zero complaints about the layers shifting or anything like that, even if you sleep right on the middle of the mattress.

Based on the information you’ve provided, I would absolutely recommend the 13" organic with firm Talalay over extra firm Dunlop over extra firm Dunlop over extra firm Dunlop for your side and medium Talalay over firm Dunlop over extra firm Dunlop over extra firm Dunlop for your partner’s side. The top Talalay layer should provide all the contour and pressure relief needed to avoid any pressure point issues and will add secondary support to the mattress. Secondary support is needed to fill in the gaps between your body and the mattress – back sleepers normally need secondary support to fill in the gaps between the small of their back and the mattress; side sleepers normally need secondary support to fill in the gaps between their mid-section and the mattress, and stomach sleepers normally need this under their belly or in their upper shoulder / clavicle area. If these parts of a person’s body aren’t supported by the mattress, their muscles will work throughout the night to hold these parts of the body up, and by the time they wake up they’ve got back pain. So the top 3” of Talalay latex will provide contour, pressure relief, and secondary support. The remaining Dunlop layers should provide all the support needed to maintain proper spinal alignment and avoid back pain. Please keep in mind that our initial recommendations have a 90% success rate (we only have a 10% layer exchange rate and a 3%-4% return rate) so there’s a 90% chance that the above recommendation works perfectly for you.

Although it’s not likely that you’ll need to rearrange layers or exchange layers, you certainly have the option to adjust the mattress according to you and your partner’s specific needs and preferences, both in the short-term and long-term. We have a 90 day exchange and return period, so you can exchange a layer within the first 90 days for a flat-rate $30 fee for the first exchange and the full cost of shipping for any subsequent exchanges. We will ship your layers first, and we will ship them with extra plastic that you can use to package your current layers, and we will ship it with a pre-paid Fed Ex return label. Also, if you will please call us when you are ready to ship your layers back we will schedule a free Fed Ex pick up for you. You will have 30 days after its arrival to return a layer of your choosing, so you’ll have plenty of time to try a few different combinations with the layers you have and the layer we will be sending you so that you can get your comfort and support levels just right.

Thanks for the info @Sleep_EZ and the suggestions. I wasn’t too sure about an all latex mattress due to edge support concerns but maybe that is something that we can get over.

Looking at your adjustable frames it says they are both rated for 750 lbs. Since the king size adjustable frame is split into two pieces does that mean that each side will have the 750 lb limit or does that limit apply to the entire adjustable base?

One more question about the adjustable base options. With the elevated adjustable base that can elevate the head of the entire bed…would that help with snoring? I used to be a side sleeper exclusively but about a year or so ago I started sleeping on my stomach to help with the snoring and breathing. I likely have sleep apnea but I’m not going to bother with trying to do a sleep study for multiple reasons I won’t bore you with. If this adjustable frame will help with that I might be interested in it and was wondering if you knew when you would get the king size back in stock.

Also, do you offer any sort of military discount? I’m a veteran who was in the Navy from ‘93-‘07.

Do you have any specs for the Luma bed especially when it comes to the coils? Since you already like it I will try to match up to one of our hybrid models that will contain the latex so it doesn’t shift around.

Each half of the adjustable base will hold 750 pounds, so they’re plenty durable.

Regarding the incline bases, we should have them in stock in about a week.

Yes - our Incline Therapy adjustable base can absolutely help with certain snoring and breathing issues by slightly elevating the entire head of the bed. Unlike a standard adjustable base that only raises the upper body from the waist up, incline therapy tilts the entire sleeping surface from head to toe. This keeps your body in a more natural position while still using gravity to help open your airway. They have TONS of benefits (although I’ve never used it myself) -

Snoring Reduction - Elevating the head of the bed can help keep your airway open and reduce the vibration in your throat that causes snoring.

Mild Sleep Apnea Support - While it’s not a substitute for a medical diagnosis or CPAP, incline therapy can help improve airflow for some people with mild obstructive sleep apnea.

Improved Breathing - Helpful for nasal congestion, seasonal allergies, or sinus issues by reducing sinus pressure and promoting easier breathing.

Acid Reflux & GERD Relief - Gravity helps keep stomach acid from traveling upward, which can make a big difference for nighttime heartburn.

Reduced Postnasal Drip & Mucus Buildup - Elevation can help prevent mucus from pooling in the throat, which sometimes worsens coughing or congestion at night.

Better Spinal Alignment vs. Propping with Pillows - Because the whole bed is tilted, you avoid the neck and back strain that can happen with stacked pillows or wedge cushions.

Less Pressure on Heart & Lungs - Slight incline can improve circulation and make breathing easier for people with certain cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.

I’d be happy to offer a 5% discount if you use the coupon code Military at checkout, and that’s our biggest discount and we can only apply one discount per order, just FYI. And thank you so much for your service, by the way!!

No I sure don’t. I can’t even remember what the actual name of the bed is. I just know it has the Talalay topper that can’t seem to stay in place.

As far as your recommendation for my side of the mattress, is there a chance that it might be a bit too firm? On our current bed it has a 3” talalay topper that came with the bed that is medium firmness and I love how it feels. I like how it allows me to sink in a tiny bit and feels soft to me. When we first got it I did wonder if I should have gotten the firm talalay topper because it felt very cushy to me and I was always accustomed to sleeping on a firm mattress, but I got used to it very quickly and I’m glad that I didn’t exchange it for a firm talalay topper.

As far as the inclining base, after thinking about it I don’t think I would actually use that feature at all. Earlier this year we stayed at a rental property and the bed was on an old school metal frame and the middle of the frame at the foot of the bed gave way when I sat down right in the middle of the foot of the bed to get ready for going to bed. It had to have been 20 years old…. Anyway I tried to prop it up as best as I could that night and had a hard time sleeping because it felt like I was laying downhill and I just didn’t like it.

As far as the base goes, I was able to figure out who the manufacturer of the base you guys use is and I think I might just order it directly from them since I can use my HSA account to purchase directly from them. Your pricing is better but I have quite a bit sitting in my HSA so it kind of makes sense to use that if I can.

I went ahead and placed my order using your suggestions on the mattress layers. I figured I can always try a different firmness for a layer if need be.

Out of curiosity since your mattresses are delivered and we have to assemble it ourselves, how many boxes should we expect and how heavy will they be? Just curious of what to expect.

Did you order a king mattress with split layers, or did you order 2 twin XL mattresses?

King mattress with split layers. I used the layers that you suggested.

Ahh OK thanks for clarifying, that would ship in 2 boxes. We install the layer in the cover before it ships, and you’ll put the top 2 layers in the cover and zipper it up.

Ok cool. Thanks for that info. I was thinking that we would have to install everything into the cover.

I just received a notification from FedEx that my mattress has been shipped. It’s saying that two boxes have been picked up (weights for them are 74 and 83 lbs), but there is a third box that weighs 124 lbs that hasn’t been picked up yet. Does that seem right to you? Total weight is 281 lbs for this mattress?

You guys mistake on one of the extra firm Dunlop layers and put a layer of lead in it instead? lol 281 lbs for a mattress is a lot heavier than I figured it would be.

Your order shipped in a total of three boxes. The heaviest box is indeed 127lbs, which contains two king 3" layers. All three boxes were picked up and are currently in transit. Your FedEx master tracking number is
39209255160.

So the mattress weighs 281 lbs after all?

Yes, the average king size 13" mattress weighs between approximately 270lbs and 285lbs, depending on latex type and densities.

Wow that’s crazy. I had no idea. It’s almost double the weight of my previous king size hybrid latex mattress.

From your experience with Ergomotion, how quickly do they usually ship their bases out from order placement? I ordered my base from them at the same time that I purchased the mattress from you, and the base hasn’t shipped yet.

I’ve tried to email them a couple times and no response and I’ve tried calling them and they haven’t answered the phone. They leave automated messages with reasons why nobody is available to answer the phone.
