Ordered my first latex mattress!

I read a lot on this forum many years ago (2013). I was needing a new mattress at the time (we were moving and I wanted to downsize to a queen). Honestly, I ended up not really being able to use any of the suggestions here due to time and money and ended up buying a mattress during a local good sale. I think it’s a Serta innerspring one with a gel foam eurotop on it. Got a great deal on it, so I was good on viewing it as ‘temporary’ if need be. It hasn’t been that bad. A year ago I did add a 3" memory foam topper to it. I’m not currently unhappy, but I’ve just been curious about other kinds of mattresses lately. Full memory foam doesn’t appeal to me that much as the times I’ve laid on one, I just feel like I get stuck in it and that I get hot. I thought latex was out of the budget, but started seeing more offered at lower pricepoints, so that got me doing more research.

I ended up ordering the Roma from SleepEZ. I liked that the company has been in business a long time and that they seem respected on this and other forums. Their all latex model really appealed to me, but I could not justify the cost. I also have had a really hard time picking out a hardness. I’ve used guides and calculators on various websites and still could not decide between medium and firm. So, with the Roma being medium on one side and firm on the other, I felt like it would be a good compromise. I will still have my foam memory topper if needed.

Since my original post in 2013, where I was 225 lbs, I gained weight (up to 245 lbs) and then have lost weight. I’m now at 160 pounds, so still overweight, but not considered obese like I was before. On some calculators, my BMI (27) put me ordering the firm, but my goal weight (lose another 15 pounds) has me in the medium. I also toss and turn a lot during the night. I think I end up sleeping most on my side and back (suggest a medium), but I also like to stretch out on my stomach (suggests a firm). I do get some hip and lower back pain, but less so since I lost weight and am able to sleep more on my back. Hopefully, I will like at least one side of the Roma!

I have this foundation ordered ($170). Amazon.com The slats are supposed to be just under 3" apart (seller says 2.89"). I used a Labor Day code and got 10% off the mattress with free shipping. No tax since I am in a different state, so the mattress ended up being $675. Cheap for latex, but more than I have ever spent on a mattress before.

Thank you again for all the info on this site and I really hope this mattress works out for me!

Hello Aaintx

Thank you kindly for your post and congratulations on the purchase of your Roma mattress! At 160lbs, the medium side of your Roma is the recommended density for you. The plush quilted cover will provide pressure relief while the medium Dunlop latex over firm Dunlop latex will offer gradual support. The great thing about this mattress is that if you feel as though you need to try a bit more support, then you can simply flip the mattress over for a firmer sleep surface.

Please keep us posted as to how the mattress is working for you. Don’t hesitate to call our office as well should you have any questions. You can reach us at 480-966-8731. Thanks again, and enjoy your new mattress!

Thank you for your reply. I just could not commit to the medium knowing I sometimes sleep on my stomach. I’m glad to hear you think that is the right firmness. If so, it may be that the firm side with my current 3" memory foam topper might also be a contender if I have trouble making the switch over to latex.

And now I guess the waiting game continues. My new rug, foundation, and mattress protector have arrived. Still waiting on the mattress to ship. According to their page, they normally ship in 2 business days, but guess maybe they are behind now.

This weekend I will go ahead and swap out my bed surround, frame, and box springs with the new rug and foundation. That way when the new mattress arrives, I’ll only have to swap those out.

I’m so sorry for the delay but we’ve been a bit behind because of how successful our Labor Day sale has been. I just called the warehouse and they let me know that your order is shipping today, so it will likely be delivered to you on Monday, 09/17/2018 and we will email your tracking information once we have it. I’d like to thank you for any understanding you may afford this matter, and I’m very sorry for the delay.

I replied to your email, but once again, thank you for the reply. I am pleased you had a successful sale. I did receive my tracking info. Looking forward to it!

Thank you kindly! Please let us know if you have any further questions. You can also call our office directly at 480-966-8731. Enjoy your new mattress!

Had a tracking update change email this morning. Monday delivery changed to today! It just now went on the vehicle for delivery, so it should be this afternoon before it arrives. I’ve put in to take the afternoon off so that I can go home and start swapping out my old bed and mattress and get the new one built and in place. Hopefully, I will soon have some updates to share.

That is great news! Thank you for the update. We look forward to hearing further updates as to how your mattress is working out for you. Enjoy, and have a terrific day!

I figured I would go ahead and just chronicle things here in case anyone else is curious. My queen sized Roma mattress did arrive today. One large box.

I removed my current bed this afternoon. After taking it apart, I realized my current frame and box spring probably would have worked. It was very rigid, with boards and springs inside.

However, I did go ahead with the swap. Put down my thin rug and assembled the 14" foundation I linked to on the first post. I was impressed with it. Good value. Solid wood construction.

Mattress arrived about an hour later. I had the box on my porch waiting for my husband to get home from work. It started raining and I decided to try to bring it inside. Very heavy box, but I was able to walk it in the door fairly easily. Then went ahead and walked it to the bedroom.

I removed the box (tape and staples). I put it in a spare room to store for a few months. I thought I might could take off the outer wrap of plastic only, but once I got started, it all sort of went together and my mattress suddenly started unfolding on the ground.

I worked my way around it, carefully cutting off plastic. I then kept going side to side, working it up onto the frame. I assume I have medium side on top.

I covered it with the same waterproof mattress pad as sold by SleepEZ, then added the rest of the bedding. There were also two standard sized latex pillows included. I only use queen and king sized pillows, so they look tiny, but they were free, so I’m not picky.

Any odor was very faint. Certainly no off-gassing like you get with memory foam.

My experience to to this point is rated at an A+. Customer service is fabulous and I was very impressed with the product upon initial inspection.

This mattress will have a hard time from the start. I haven’t slept well this week and my back has already been bothering me. I’m sure that all my heavy lifting and assembling on the floor today did not help.

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to tonight. I did lay down on it on top of the bedding. It reminded me much more of an innerspring mattress than a memory foam mattress. It will be firmer than the 3" topper I was sleeping on, but I was really starting to feel the lack of support.

I’ll update again after I’ve slept on it a night or two!

Nothing really to say after one night. It reminded me of sleeping at a hotel with a decent bed. No real complaints, just didn’t feel like my bed. I think I have the medium side upwards, but not for certain.

I got up several times during the night (normal for me) and I did get some odor each time I laid back down. I think it might have been from the pillow and not the mattress.

Still feeling optimistic.

Second night was better, but I noticed sleeping on my back just didn’t feel right. Finally occurred to me that maybe it was the pillow. Swapped out latex pillow for my normal pillow and was finally comfortable on my back. Pillow is good for side and stomach, so I might just end up swapping back and forth during the night for a bit.

About to head into night 3. Good thing is that the kittens woke me up early this morning and I didn’t nap, so I’m at least tired right now.

Third night was fine. I think I ended up doing a lot of sleeping on my stomach. I’ve got some lower back pain this morning, but sleeping on my stomach for too long does that. I also took an OTC sleeping pill last night, so that could attribute to staying in one position too long.

So, last night was night number 4. Normal night. No sleeping pill. No after dinner drink.

Slept pretty good. Started out with the latex pillow, but quickly abandoned it. I think it is just too tall for me. I know I slept on my side a lot. No aches or pains this morning. Smell is almost gone. Pleased with mattress.

Hello Aaintx

It is good to hear that you are sleeping comfortably! Thank you for the updates! Again, don’t hesitate to call our office should you have any questions. You can reach us at 480-966-8731.

I’m a little torn. Bad sleep last night. My hips were really aching. Almost went downstairs and retrieved my memory foam topper at 2am. But I didn’t, and sometime after that I fell asleep and slept soundly until 5am. So, now I don’t know what to do about tonight. Try it again as is or add the topper?

Hello Aaintx

Thank you for all your feedback. In some cases, if a mattress surface is slightly too firm for you, then adding a 2" topper can be just what you need to achieve contour. I recommend giving it a few more nights on your Roma before you add a topper. Your body goes through an adjustment period anytime you begin sleeping on a new surface. Based on your feedback, the first few nights went well for you, with the last night being uncomfortable. This could be your body adjusting. If you are still feeling pain after one or two nights, then I would try the topper.

Please don’t hesitate to call our office anytime. Thanks again! SleepEZ 480-966-8731

I didn’t end up changing anything last night. Not good sleep, but nowhere near as bad as the night before. I was sore all day yesterday - even had to swap out my desk chair a few times at work, plus some time spent sitting on the floor and some spent laying on the floor as well. I did remember that I had forgotten to take my CBD oil Wednesday night and Thursday morning. I did take it yesterday evening. Perhaps it has more of an effect on me than I realized.

Back on my oil plus having some patience. Did not add topper. No real pain overnight or today. Changed sheets today and I’m hoping that helps with odor, although I feel some is probably trapped in the mattress cover which I did not want to wash yet.
