Tempurpedic Rhapsody discontinued

Hi Phoenix!

We’re still poking around on and off as I still love our Berkeley Ergonomics bed, but my husband will be fine with it for a few months and then boycott it for a few weeks at a time. So, we’re just exploring several alternatives.

Now that the Tempurpedic Rhapsody has been discontinued I wondered if you knew which of their new models would be most similar to it? Their sales people all say something different & it’s hard to find the foam break-downs on their site anymore!

I’ve even contemplated something simple like the Simplicity. Even though the quality is less, so is the price and since we seem to go through mattresses more often than I’d like, I am less concerned with the LONG long term these days and more about what will make us happy for a few years. If the price is right, we’ll just replace every few years. Sheesh.

Then of course, there’s always the Select Foam Regalis to consider as well.

Thank you & hope you are well!!

Interesting. As I just consider the idea of “budget” memory foam mattresses–

The Tempur Simplicity is of course poor quality at ~2-3lb foam?

The “equivalent” mattress from Select Foam is their Select HD - Conform 8", which has 3" of 5.2lb foam, which seems more similar to the very original Tempur mattress? And like it would be much higher quality?

Hi Sleepless in Dallas,

I don’t know from personal comparisons and it seems that Tempurpedic is doing their best to remove the specs of their mattresses from sites across the internet and now that they have introduced their new line it’s even more difficult to find out the specs of their mattresses. One of the few exceptions is Jordans which lists the specs of their major brand mattresses (to their credit).

I don’t think any of their current mattresses are exactly the same but the old Rhapsody had the following layers …

Rhapsody:

Quilt
Tempur-TEX cover w/ micro-suede sides
FR Sock

Comfort Layers
1.2" TEMPUR-HD 7.1 LB Comfort layer
2.8" TEMPUR Support layer 5.3lb

Support System
Dual Airflow Base
4" 2.2lb Convoluted foam
4" 2.2lb Convoluted foam

and I think the closest of their current mattresses in terms of design would probably be the Rhapsody Breeze which has the following layers

Rhapsody Breeze:

Quilt
Tempur-Breeze cover w/micro-suede sides
Cover contains Phase Change Material
FR Sock

Comfort Layers
1.2" Tempur-Breeze HD 7.1LB
2.8" Tempur-Climate support layer 5.3LB

Support System
Dual Airflow system
4" 2.2LB Convoluted poly foam
4" 2.2LB Convoluted poly foam

The new Rhapsody Luxe has the following layers …

Rhapsody Luxe:

Quilt
Easy Refresh Stretch Knit cover
Smart Climate System, moisture-wicking,
Cool to the touch

Comfort Layers
2" TEMPUR-HD 7.1LB
2" TEMPUR Material 5.3LB

Support System
Dual Airflow Base
4 3/4" Airflow Base layer 2.0LB
4 3/4" Airflow Base Layer 2.0LB

I haven’t tested this in person but with the thicker layer of 7.1 lb memory foam it would likely feel softer and be more contouring for most people once the memory foam has warmed up.

The Contour Elite has the following layers …

Contour Elite:

Quilt
Easy Refresh Stretch Knit Cover
Smart Climate System, moisture-wicking,
Cool to the touch

Comfort Layers
1.2" Tempur HD 7.1 LB
2.3" Tempur Material 5.3 LB

Support System
Dual Airflow system
4.5" Airflow Base layer 2.0 LB
4.5" Airflow Base layer 2.0 LB

Again I haven’t tested this in person but with the slightly thinner layer of the 5.3 lb memory foam it would likely be a little firmer than the Rhapsody and have a similar degree of contouring.

In terms of “feel” … The Rhapsody was rated as medium-firm, the Rhapsody Breeze is rated as firm, and both the Contour Elite and the Contour Luxe are rated as medium-firm but if I had to guess I would say the Contour Elite would likely be on the firmer side of the medium firm range and the Contour Luxe would likely be on the softer side of the medium-firm range with the Rhapsody in between them although of course all of this can be quite subjective and each person’s perceptions of how a mattress “feels” or compares to another mattress can vary.

The Simplicity has different firmness options so I don’t know which one the Conform 8 compares to or “how” it compares (you can see the different ways that one mattress can match another one in post #9 here) but it certainly uses higher quality materials.
