Can you recommend an independent mattress manufacturer or other good place to buy mattresses in the Washington, DC, area?
Hello Allen,
There’s not a lot in the way of factory direct mattress manufacturers in the Washington, DC area (which I always find odd). There are a few choices however which may provide better value or are better places to test mattresses as a guideline for an online purchase depending on what you are looking for.
NOTE: There is an updated list for the DC area in post #2 here.
http://americanfoamcenter.com/ Merrifield, VA. They are a foam outlet but are also a local factory direct mattress manufacturer. I talked with Robert (who is the owner) and was very impressed. It’s clear that he “knows his stuff” about foam. He has been making mattresses for 50 years and is the kind of person that will give you accurate information. He also has a showroom where different materials and layers can be tested. He uses high quality materials like Latex (Dunlop and Talalay), high quality polyfoam up to 2.8 lbs (true HR foam) and memory foam from a quality American supplier. They are a high quality and good value choice, especially for the area, and I would certainly suggest that anyone in the DC area include them in their research. Make sure you call first because Robert is the person there with the knowledge.
http://winndom.com/retailer2.html Wholesale manufacturer who sells through local retail outlets. Their retail store finder has a list of outlets (not quite up to date). I have talked with them and I know they work closely with their retailers and provide good quality and value. In particular though … I would talk with Michelle at http://www.bedcraftersbymichelle.com/ in Wulliamsburg, VA who works very closely with them and is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful about all their mattresses and mattress materials and construction in general and custom builds every mattress she sells. She is a great resource for Winndom regardless of which retailer you are dealing with.
http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/more_ways_to_shop/stores/store.ftl?x=washington_dc A retail direct outlet in Washington, DC that carries mattresses made by Restwell. They sell a range of latex and other mattresses. Make sure you check the density of any polyfoam layers in their mattresses if you are looking at their memory foam or polyfoam mattresses because they tend to be low density and I would tend to focus on their latex mattresses.
http://www.healthyback.com/storelocs/stores/Columbia/205 Retailer. They carry their own version of Pure Latex Bliss which uses Celsion Talalay latex instead of regular Talalay latex in the top layer. Great for testing and better value than most national brands. The oultlets I have talked with are knowledgeable and have good service.
Shop Affordable Home Furnishings & Home Goods - IKEA College Park, MD, Woodbridge, VA. Carries a Dunlop latex (85% natural) over pocket coil mattress and an all Dunlop (also 85% natural) latex mattress. Both of these may be quite firm however they would make a good base for an additional softer talalay latex topper. Also see post #3 here.
http://www.mattresstraditions.com/ Retailer. They carry quite a range of alternative brands (some of which are very expensive and some of which are much less). Classic Sleep (a smaller national brand) and Winndom (a local wholesale manufacturer) may be better value here.
http://www.mtvernonsleep.com/ Retailer in Fredericksburg, VA. Carries Pure Latex Bliss Talalay latex mattresses along with some major brands (which I would ignore).
http://mattressfame.com/ Retailer in Rockville, MD. They carry several brands which may have better materials, quality, and value including Therapedic, Eclipse, and Eastman House. They also have a close relationship with the factory that produces them so they can be more responsive to customer’s needs. They carry latex, latex hybrids and other options such as gel memory foam that may have some better value and are open to supplying the specs of their mattresses (to the degree that the information from their manufacturers allow it) so customers can make more meaningful comparisons.
http://www.mdmattressman.com/showroom Retailer in Lanham, MD. Carry Eclipse, Therapedic, and Corsicana some of which may have better value depending again on the materials in the mattresses (and the ability and willingness of the outlet to give them to you) and prices.

http://www.savvyrest.com/ Factory direct manufacturer in Vienna, Charlottesville, VA.who makes a line of “choose your own” layer Talalay or Dunlop latex mattresses. While they are high quality, they are much more expensive than similar mattresses purchased through most small factory direct manufacturers or online (including from some of our members). They would make a good testing ground if you were looking for a latex mattress of this type from an online manufacturer.
Most of the chain stores in the area I looked at also have little to nothing I would consider good value.
Hope this helps in your search.

In addition to the recommendations by Phoenix, check out CozyPure in Norfolk (https://www.cozypure.com) if you don’t find something in NoVa. It’s not the worst drive down there to try out their products. Sure, I am biased, but after 2 months, we are very comfortable with our sleep system. I am not affiliated with them at all. Just another option in your quest for rest. Phoenix, feel free to copyright “The Quest for Rest” slogan. B)
Hi TDI Hoo,
