vertical glue seams

I have a question about glue seams. I have heard that talalay latex is only manufactured in a few sizes. By size I mean length and width. I am not referring to thickness. Because of this, in some latex mattresses, each talalay layer consists of 2 or three smaller pieces of latex that are laid next to each other and glued together. This creates vertical glue seams. Of course mattress manufacturers also put layers on top of each other and glue them together creating horizontal glues seam. However, in this post, I am asking about the vertical glue seams not the horizontal glue seams.

I have heard that vertical glue seems can be uncomfortable and the glue can have potentially dangerous chemicals in them. I would rather avoid them if I can. Unfortunately, most sellers of talalay latex mattress don’t mention vertical glue seams at all. The ones that do mention them provide contradictory information. One seller says all talalay mattresses greater than 39" in width must be constructed from smaller pieces of latex that are glued together with vertical seams. Sleep Like The Dead says the cut off is 40". A local dealer told me that Radium told him they could manufacture as one piece any size of talalay latex up to a queen, but a King could not be made as a single piece for technical reasons. One website suggested (but did not explicitly state) that only a California King required vertical glue seams.

I am trying to get some straight answers. Obviously any size mattress could have vertical glue seams if the mattress manufacturer decides to make the mattress out of smaller pieces of latex they have lying around. To some degree I am going to have to trust the company that sells me the mattress. However, I could weed out obvious lies if I knew what sizes the latex manufacturers make the latex in. Does anyone know what sizes any of the talalay latex manufactures (Latex International, Radium, are there others?) make single pieces of latex in?

Hi Ty,

Talalay latex (and there are only the two manufacturers who make it in the western world) is manufactured in two mold sizes by both companies. One is Twin XL (actually 40 x 80) and the other is queen. The queen molds are much less common and most sizes other than twin XL will have a glue seam.

They use non toxic latex based glue which is very strong and flexible and they match the pieces very carefully so the glue seam is usually undetectable.

In some cases you can special order a queen without a glue seam but they are often an extra cost because they are much less common (see here for example).

California King will have two glue seams … one for the width and one for the extra length.

Thanks Phoenix. Much appreciated.
