I LOVE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED HERE. I’VE LEARNE ALOT ABOUT WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SHOPPING FOR A NEW MATTRESS. I’M IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW MATTRESS AND WANT TO CHECK OUT MEMORY FOAM AND OR LATEX MATTRESSES. FROM WHAT I’VE READ, GOING TO A DIRECT OUTLET IS A GOOD THING TO DO (AS I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT TO DO HAD I NOT VISITED THE UNDERGROUND). I LIVE ON THE EAST SIDE OF DETROIT, MI AND WAS WONDERING IF THERE WERE ANY CLOSE BY THAT I COULD CHECK OUT THAT YOU RECOMMEND. OTHERWISE NOT SURE WHERE TO GO FOR SOMEWHAT RELIABLE SERVICE.

I’m more than a little surprised that there are as few good options right in Detroit as there are. Much of the local manufacturing is on the west side of Michigan however there are a few that are in reasonable driving distance (100 miles or so) and there are some better retailers in the area as well. www.matt-to-go.com/ Shelby Township. Retail outlet that is run by one of the most knowledgeable “mattress people” in the industry. He has also produced a series of videos that are very educational about mattress construction. They carry Therapedic mattresses (including the higher-quality MediCoil HD line), latex models and latex/memory foam hybrids and Pure Talalay Bliss mattresses (Talalay latex). I think very highly of them and they are well worth including in your research if for no other reason than to get a “Beducation” but it also helps that they run on a lower margin than most retail stores, have some good values available, and are one of the members of this site.

They make a range of two sided mattresses that use a firm innerspring with layers of cotton, wool, high density polyfoam, and latex on each side and make their own true box springs as well. They also make custom sizes and custom designs and can make custom adjustments to your mattress if it needs to be a little softer or firmer after a purchase. Their mattresses are also inner and outer tufted which adds to the quality and durability of the mattress as well. They are in a higher budget range but would make good value choices because of the quality and durability of their materials and construction.
Denver Mattress® - The Easiest Way to Get the Right Mattress Toledo, Holland, OH. They are a regional manufacturer that makes a wide range of mattresses including innersprings and their iChoice models which include a “mostly latex” and a latex/memory foam hybrid. They are transparent about the materials they use in their own mattresses but I would avoid the major brands they also carry.

They are in a more premium price range compared to other similar mattresses so I would make some careful “value” comparisons here.

Call first to make sure what they carry on their floor. Their latex tends to have polyfoam on top which is “at the edge” of what I normally recommend in terms of thickness but is better than most national brands.

Make sure you are able to find out the specific quality of the materials in their mattresses (foam density in the case of memory foam and polyfoam).

I would probably suggest making a few phone calls first to discuss your needs, preferences, and budget on the phone first and to get a sense of which ones carry the choices you want to test and that seem most knowledgeable and helpful on the phone. You would probably save a lot of time and frustration focusing your search on these outlets rather than the many chain stores and major brands that will likely lead to “mattress shopping” frustration and a lot of time spent listening to sales techniques and misleading information rather than truly helpful information and service. There are some good choices here.
